Walking across campus one day, gave me an idea. I saw a gentleman in a wheelchair attempting to overcome the ramps on campus It is not an easy task. I tried to do the same last week. I borrowed my wife's wheelchair, which she needs occasionally to help with her Muscular Dystrophy. I noticed a lot of people on the campus that would hold doors open for me. Some would offer to help me to overcome the hills on campus It was then that I understood what needs to be done on this campus. The ramps need to be at smaller angles. According to the guidelines for wheelchair accessibility, the ramps are fine. That's the most difficult route, unless, of course, you get in the car and drive there. The only way anyone could even remotely understand, is to get into a wheelchair and attempt to navigate the campus. I do not claim to completely understand exactly how difficult it is, but I do have a greater understanding now, then I did three weeks ago. I commend those men and women that must use the assisI tance offered by wheelchairs. it hard how was know only just pretending. Entering into the doors is a difficult matter as welL There is only one wheelchair accessible door for each building. That is ridiculous. I know it meets the code, but it doesn't really make it any easier for the person in need of the automatic door. For example, the Jennings Technology Building has one automatic door. It also has two handicm tire capped parking stalls. opposite side of the building. Dear editor, have a quick comment and a question. First, about the election controversy, I agree that some of the signs and slogans were inappropriate. However, in The Dixie Sun, there was a statement made by a lady from the Humane Society that was insane. She said that murderers usually start by killing animals, then they start killing people. Like they Todd Fallows and Darryl Barfuss were really going to kill the dog, which didn't exist! Get a life lady! He's a joker, not a murI derer. Also, what's the deal with file marijuana leaves on the fake bushes in the Smith Computer Center? People tried to ban Cyprus Hill from coming to the Avenna Center, but those same people are growing plastic marijuana in our computer center. Can you get high from plastic fumes? Matt Vandermyde Dixie College Student Double Thumbs Up for The Dixie Sun rt Lucas-sanction- Dear editor, I was surfing this evening and wondered how my former Dixie Sun friends are. I still have fond memories of working on the newspaper staff and find the growth I achieved there is something I will always cherish. I still keep in contact with friends that worked with me on the newspaper staff. Anyhow, things look great on the Internet. I really like the masthead on the paper! It looks as if things are really doing well. Have you won any more awards? I would be interested to see how things are going now. Anyway, I just wanted to give you a double thumbs up on the paper. Tell your staff they are doing great, and I empathize with them on the demands of what it takes to produce a newspaper! Mindy Ford Gibson former editor-in-chiof The Dixie Sun ef |
