For set c nil Jay.- past, the awnl of (he (r ant Powder Company, of Sa'u Fianeiseo, Mr. iid.-ail, lias been in this city seeking to introduce the Giant Powder to the notice of miners and others oth-ers engaged in blasting operations. ' An arrangement wis made between Gen. II. B. Lluw.sm and Col. John .Sharp and Mr. .Birdsall to give this powder a thor ugh trial. Accord ngly Pascoc's lime-stone quarry, north of the waim springs, was selected as the site for the test. On Friday last three men : were started to work with drills, and by Saturday afternoon a hole had been made into the solid limestone rock some ten feet deep. Accepting the invitation extendi d Lv General Clawsou, we acjuuipaniid him to the quarry, and there found Col. John Sharp, Mr. Bird-alb Ales. Ma-Jor.Esq., Ma-Jor.Esq., Ccl.T. G. Webber, and several other gentlemen assembled to witnes.-the witnes.-the experiments. Ascending the lace of the hill, to the north of the quarry, some fifty feet, we reached a ledge of rock ten feet wide, at the further extremity ex-tremity of which and close against the perpendicular face of the solid lime-rtone lime-rtone that towered far above us at the back, the hole was drilled. After some neeessstry cleaning out, the agent and Col. Sharp proceeded to chirge the blast with Giant Towder, which t' us looked very like cayenne pepper, dight- ly dampened. Forty-eight cartridges, weighing in all eight pounds, were placed carefully in the hole, and tamped down. One end of the fuso, to whch had been attached a small copper de-tonadnj; de-tonadnj; cap aa inch long, and a little ef the powder to serve as priru.ng, wa.i then inserted and lowered down the hole till it came in contact with the powder. The hole wm theo filled up with water. The charging of the blat being completed, com-pleted, after iuitins the fuse the party moved out of harm' way, but in .ncLit f the scene of operation!, to witness the effect of the discharge. In a tew moments a loud report wa heard and the whole fare of the immense rock was seen to topple forward and full into the canon below. The ma ive l"dge upon which v .. hte!y .stoi.. no longer existed, but in its place a vat ho;e, out of w hich two hundred ton.- ot rock had been burled by the explo.-ion, yawned beneath, and lor a. eons.drrable distance aiouud the rocks were i thoroughly tho-roughly shaken and riven asunder Uial a hundred tons or more couid be detached de-tached with the Ac'p of pick a. id -r.iy-bar alone. , Another aj.eriment ou a .-mailer (K.ale was tried befcit we left the giound. A hrge l'ragmenr. oi detached rock, many tons iu Weight, lying at the )ouih of the quarry, and into which a tmall hole had been drilled, was blown into fragments by au incredibly h nail quantity of this powerful tub-tance.
