College Prep by Patricia Goldsmith mer programs. Talk to your librarian; entire books are devoted to summer opportunities for high school students. Remember too that you can learn as much about yourself and the world from a job supervising day camp counselors in a city park two blocks from home as you can on a marine research vessel off Maui. For many Utah students, summer earnings are essential to college preparation. Colleges respect Before putting on the suntan lotion, however, students who plan to attend college should consider the unique opportunities for personal development the next three months offer. Students can establish themselves as scholars and budding young intellects, setting themselves apart from other candidates for college admission and scholarships. How you spend your summer can help answer every college admission officers question: Is this just a bright kid or is this somebody who loves to learn? Summer vacation is a time to exercise your mind as well as your diving or dirt biking muscles. Committed, involved students spend their free time with care. Pursue academic activities that dont fit into the high school curriculum. Go off on a tangent. Develop your own project. What you learn about yourself will help you better present yourself on a college application. Try your hand at a program in marine biology, archeology or computer graphics. Now is a good time to discover you get hopelessly seasick or you thrill to Anasazi pottery or there is life beyond Nintendo. Consider summer language camps, outdoor leadership schools or theater stock companies. Summer opportunities can be a time to safely take a risk. Your fruit flies may all die but youll learn plenty of biology from any laboratory experience. Keep in mind, however, that if youre taking a college course, you may be generating a college transcript. Under those cir- cumstances, summer grades can reflect to your credit or haunt you forever. Determine in advance how much effort you want to put forth. If youre unwilling to invest the energy necessary to succeed in a college-level course, a less competiit class might allow tive, you to take more intellectual and creative risks; For program ideas, talk to teachers or counselors. Call a college that interests you and inquire about sum stu- dent efforts: Holding a responsible job to earn college funds demonstrates motivation and commitment to education. Of further benefit, a letter of recommendation from a workplace supervisor can flesh out a college application with a side of you no teacher knows. Parents, neighbors and other connections can often help you find interesting jobs. Hold out for something that helps you accomplish your goals, even if it pays 20 cents per hour less than you first offer. Take on as much responsibility as you can. Teaching preschool rather than flipping burgers may provide a path to a satisfying career. Any amount of volunteer work is good experience and shows you care about other people. Summer is also a time to read. The single best way to improve vocabulary and reading comprehension test scores is to read widely. Read the classics, news magazines and scientific journals. Keep notes. An intriguing article you come across may someday tie in with a future classroom assignment. It might also provide excellent fodder for college admission and scholarship interviews. More importantly, a well read student writes papers and converses with professors with relative ease. Set reading goals, then pace yourself. A Lake Powell houseboat is probably not the best place to delve into Dantes nine circles of Hell. I recall a student at a college fair in a remote town who asked every admissions officer present what single book he should be sure to read Woods Cross High School, living up to its Tradition of Excellence, sports superior Senior and Intermediate Jazz bands this year. They performed well on their recent trip to California with the schools concert choir. They played to a receptive crowd and did well, considering they had almost no sleep the night before, as they were traveling to California on buses. On the trip they participated in a clime and workshop at the happiest place on earth, Disneyland. They also got to perform to a soundtrack recording while at Disneyland. If there is one word to describe the bands, it is superior. The Senior Jazz Band received superior ratings at the State Jazz Festival and Weber State Jazz Festival. Several soloists and sections have been recognized throughout the season. The Big Band Dance at Valentines Day was a great success, and the students even had a really fun time.
