In spite of drastic cuts made to the Tooele County budget, TOOELE the county commission handed out an exclusive benefit to the Tooele County Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber of Commerce was given a gas card and granted use of county fuel, at the countys expense. The gas will go into a used 1988 Ofdsmobile Cutlass Supreme which the commission turned over to the chamber during a meeting on April 5. The car was formerly used by the Tooele County Sheriff s Department. County Attorney Ron Elton explained that the car and the gas can only be used when chamber officials are engaged in county business or promoting the county. Commissioner Teryl Hunsaker said the main reason for granting chamber officials the benefit, is they are working with Utah Department of Transportation officials on plans to build a welcome center in Tooele County. In carrying out that work, they have had to attend several meetings in Salt Lake City and throughout die state. The county commission has assigned the chamber to persuade UDOT officials of the benefits of building a welcome center near Wendover. Rose (not her real name) was initially contacted by a telephone solicitor for International Health in September 1993 and told that she hac won a Lincoln Towncar. The solicitor then told her that if she wanted to claim her prize she would need to send the company $398, which she did. Approximately one week later she was again contacted by an Internationa Health solicitor who advised her to send an additional $2,800. For her money. Rose received eight quart bottles of household cleaner. International Health is not registered with the Division of Consumer Protection to conduct telephone solicitations. But Terry Richards would like to show them the result of their of murky handiw'ork, specifically, his basement that filled with a half-fowater after the dam broke, sending a small flash flood through his neighborhood, I know they didnt intend this, but they sure created some headaches, tho Kaysville man said, adding that bout 600 gallons of water had to be pumped out of his basement. Richards wasnt the only homeowner who suffered from the water. City officials say six homes in Kaysvilles King Clarion subdivision experienced damaged basements and landscapes. Larry Mills, the citys public works foreman, said workers Friday morning discovered that, sometime between Wednesday and Friday, somebody had cut the wire mesh screen that covers the outlet pipe to the debris basin and plugged it with a sheet of plywood, creating a small pone at the mouth of the pipe. He said he believes it was the work of kids because workers found a raft made from two poles and some plywood nearby. By afternoon, city and Davis County workers were attempting to lift the plywood from over the pipe. We were trying to let (the water) out a little at a time, and the board, it was just a little board, snapped and let it all through. The torrent of water created a wall of water that traveled a half mile down Holmes Creek before spilling over the hanks into the subdivision.
