Show ft II The Salt Lake Tribune, Thursday. October II, Nine-Ye- 1073 Veteran in Work ar Advertising Animator Has Fun Drawing Television Commercials Don Young FRUIT HEIGHTS believes that even a briefcase can have a personality. Mr. Young, 1208 E. 900 South, Fruit of a Salt Lake , Heights, is a member City advertising firm. He specializes in animation. His animations have appeared on television for nine years. For each advertisement, 720 frames of film are used. He must animate 280 to 320 frames of the film to produce a flowing animation. Mr. Young began cartooning nine of years ago with a piece on the Division Continuing Education at the University of Utah. He had not been ac quainted with animation before this time. Mr. Young said a friend asked him if he could draw an animation. Although he knew little of the art, he agreed to the project. Agreed to Try' He read books on the art and proceeded. He said it would have been much more difficult for him to learn animation if he had tried it before Walt Disneys time. He said Walt Disney watched and photographed objects, such as water, to see what happened. The photographs allow the animator to give his cartoon some reality. To be an animator, you need to understand what happens to elements, he said. You also have to be artistic." Need to Understand He explained that shapes change in real life and must also change in the cartoon. "A (falling) ball will change shape as is moves to the ground. It will become elongated the farther it falls, and flattens when it hits the ground." Mr. Young said it is important to let the people know that an object, such as the ball, actually changes shape when it hits the ground. Mr. Youngs first real obstacle w as in his first animation. of shots showed 12 sheets of paper blown off a mans desk whirling in the air and eventually landing on the A sera's university campus I went batty," he said, us he tried to draw all 12 sheets of paper in different positions as he got further into the animation. He solved his problem by drawing one piece of paper at a time in each of the positions. He said he learned that it was important to simplify his animations after drawing the paper sequence. I see why they dont do complicated animations," said Mr. Young. "Most animation is pretty straightforward." Take Long lime Mr. Young said it takes him approximately three to five weeks to do a spot. "You have to shake your head when you see its only 30 seconds, he said. The animation he drew for the University of Utah won several awards. Before an animation can be drawn, the sound track to the commercial must be recorded. Once that is done, Mr. Young must determine what types of movements must occur with each word or series of words. "You must plot how the character is going to move in a given time and distance," he said. Must Change Size If the character is moving away, it must get smaller. He must also be concerned with the movements the character is making as it gets closer or farther away. He explained that he once drew a bird flying away. During this sequence of events, the bird got smaller plus its w ings moved up and down. The movement of the wings upward took six to eight frames of the film. Mr. Young uses a light shining table to insure through a that his drawings are uniform m size. He can also use the same drawing several time depending on how fast the movement is. There are also shortcuts for some animations. A character can only have one portion of itself moving. When this is done, the unmoveable parts of the character can be used several times. Several parts of the character can then by moved by placing the moving portions on transparencies. Eventually Mr. Young would love to be involved in a cartoon, similar to those produced by Walt Disney. Vital Data Kept In the Fridge BOUNTIFUL The South Davis chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons has implemented a program which makes medical information on senior citizens available to emergency workers. Persons participating in the program have a vial, filled with information on themselves, attached to the right hand side of the top refrigerator shelf. The refrigerator was selected since it is easily located and is fire resistant. Decals on the refrigerator door and the front door of the house indicate participation in the program. The vial is a plastic cylinder. It contains a medical information form for each member of the household. The forms list health problems, electrocardiograms, doctors names, medications and other pertinent information. A photograph of each person in the household is also included. The South Davis chapter members were also provided a copy of a Right to Die" statement, which they may or may not use. The Right to Die statement lets persons concerned know that should a situation arise in which there is no reasonable expectation of recovery from physical or mental disability, artificial means should not be used to prolong life.
