He was named a 1979 Young Columbus winner and represented The Salt Lake Tribune in the Young Columbus adventure to Belgium and Germany, April Elden was one of 150 newspaper carriers from across the country to participate in the adventure, sponsored by Parade Magazine, the Sunday supplement to the Tribune, and the Newspaper Agency Corp. For 13 days, the young carriers saw the sights and heard the sounds of continental Europe. They left New Yorks Kennedy Airport on April 1 1 and flew to Brussels, Belgium, via Sabena Belgian World 747 Airlines. For most it was their first trip abroad. Their first day in Brussels was a day of leisure, capped by a visit to the Grand Place for a Sound and Light" spectacle. The second day in Brussels was filled with a walking tour of the city. On April 14 they met with the mayor of Brussels and the U.S. ambassador, and Antwerp, which served as temporary capital of Belgium during WWII, was visited by carriers. was dinner and dance with Belgian youth The next day, they visited Antwerp, including stops at the zoo, the port and owning Maritime Museum, Diamond Workshop, the our Cathedral and Ladys House.
