county passed away sunday at the home of her daughter I 1 mrs sarah peterson after an illness of five days day the loe and respect of friends friend and relatives relative was accorded lier her at funeral services er vices held wednesday afternoon in the first ward chapel As tile the procession pio cession entered the chapel nearer my illy god to thee was played by mrs N an anna na callaway at the piano and maxine erickson violinist the profusion of beat beace ticul howers flowers was carried by bv a group of children members of the family bishop F JM INI ogden officiated at the services friend of the family stressed the love which guided mrs johnson in her home life and won on for her the respect of friends and family bishop F M ogden made a few closing remarks and the benediction as born alay may 20 1835 in broby sogn sweden in copenhagen denmark in 1865 slie she heard for the first fir t time of the L D S missionaries and in that city embraced the mormon faith and was baptized by buesen she returned to sweden and made preparations to sail for america her mother did not oppose her joining the mormon church but neither she nor any of the other relatives joined the church and the young convert came to utah alone leaving on april 4 1864 she left malmo sweden S eden in in company with the family of lars swenson after seven weeks tr travel avel they landed in new york from there ther going to nebraska where the emigrants stayed for two or three weeks making preparations for the ion long journey across the plains a distance of a thousand miles mrs johnson walked all the way from omaha nebraska to salt lake city arriving there september 15 th the e trip taking g five months captain preston had charge of her company she found herself a lone girl in a strange land she did not know the language Ian guage of the th people but how she prayed that she might learn leam to talk and understand she left salt lake with one of the teamsters ministers tf ini calendars were unknown wn until one day a stranger came to tile house informing them it was christmas day two sons were here born at st thomas both dying in chi childhood lahood president brigham young released them from this mission and they carvi again to utah arriving in Ri richfield clifield september 1871 making there home hero here when there were only a few sm ill houses and dugouts dug outs mr johnson died in mexico in 1900 surviving mrs johnson are one daughter mra bink sarah sir all peterson one granddaughter mrs elithe P sumner and one great grandson scharf sumner several nieces and nephews a also survive sur vivo most of them living in illinois mrs johnsons sister christine erial erickson son whose home was in illinois passed away five years ago at the age of 93 |
