to all participants direce director f or of utah sugar sug ar beet co operative association declares sevier county bonus plan prompted only by pure loyalty of er en and public spirited citizens of sevier county CO ucb considerable 1 discussion I has been created not 0 aly tain in sevier county but elsewhere in the state of utah by reason of ce certain r charges that were recently made in in one of the bocak local papers of salt lake city wherein the utah sugar beet cooperative co go operative association over the signature of its pre president adent and its secretary set pet forth their construction of the beet industry in utah taw th pie ent time this nis advertisement in the paper has been analyzed by sug sugar ar beet growers n this county and noted with marked surprise by the director of the utah sugar beet operative cooperative co association for this territory daniel peterson of richfield mr peterson had not been advised of the contemplated action nor had he been consulted in relation to the matters and things contained in the article this was more or loss less di distasteful tasteful to the director by bv reason of tile tact fact that tile the statements and representations wera aera not noc entirely in harmony with the past history of the sugar beet industry it has always been the policy of the association according to mr peterson to advocate the obtaining of as much for beets as a s the barkei market will justify and all eferts in the have been 1 past vot voted ed toward this coris consummation summa there being no disposition on the part of the beet glowers to obtain such a price for beets as to practically prohibit bit a profit being made by the sugar company and to increase thi profits profit of the farmer fanner but that a suitable figure would be reached which bould enable both tho the producer anti and the manufacturer to make a fair lust aust and reasonable profit according to the work and investment respect respectively ivey involved proceeding upon this theory the for beets from time to time has been increased as the market justified until at the beginning of this y vear ear the manufacturers association of f via state voluntarily raised their minimum price from to some time thereafter anoche rn mila pany in the state contracted for and obtained signers signers in in two of tha th beet producing counties this complicated the situation inasmuch a 3 nna of the larger companies in the state served a larger area by far than the company which offered the price of per ton and furthermore it placed one of tile tiie factories of this company in in a precarious cond condition itic for the reason that the contract offered for had been largely signed before any offer could be made or any action taken by the competitive corna company ariy riy and it appeared for a while that the factory would be unable to lun bv by beason of lack of acreage of beets beet and the entire county would be aff affeid ered injuriously thereby and might perchance lose an indus industry tn of proven merit and worth it was at this critical janc juncture ture that four enterprising and public spirited men namely R D young J M peterson john christen Chri stenen en and J E imag leby came forward with an offer of per ton in decess of the price offered offered by the utah idaho company thereby anti and thus assuring a nuni minimum murn of per ton for all beets brets delivered to the factory factor now it has been charged anti and was charged in the recent publication on that anis proffer was to be viewed with sus suspicion and was an bendo to the effect that the offer was actuated by the utah ut lah idaho sugar company it might be said however that there is no foundation whatsoever ver for this suspicion or conclusion when we take into consideration what the loss of a sugar factory mean to a county that has habitually supported the same and received manifold benefits by rea reason on of its e existence evi stence we can easily conclude that it its abolition would mean the writing off of the value of the property everywhere within the radius of the territory served if the sugar factory in sevier county was removed it would be tantamount to saying that real values throughout the county would depredate depreciate at leac least 30 per cent this coupled with the fact that there is a present liali hood that the price of sugar will vill justify the SOO per ton makes it a matter of practical certainty that no loss will be sustained from the fact of the additional guarantee whereas a substantial loss would be everywhere apparent if they did not operate therefore it seems most anomalous that the utah sugar beet co opera tive association should in any way attack a proposition which on the face is so go meritorious and which is deserving the approval of the association it would seem to be that the association has lost sight of the purpose of its existence which is primarily to enable the farmers to get a good price for their beets and their chief concern should be in providing ways and means for or so doing and not attacking public spirited men who encourage the industry the moa that any company is offering in the state is per ton the that is received by the patrons of the elsinore sugar factory is is merely offered by the company and by private privat Ll enterprise therefore this phase abase of the case should never have entered into the controversy tro versy and should not have been considered as further aggravation 0 of f the situation by the utah sugar beet operative cooperative co association while there might be some difference in prices between the utah an and d idaho growers this should be no concern to tile the utah sugar beet go co operative association it may well be that the price varies in every ery state according to the local conditions euch as freight rates nearness of the market local labor conditions quality of the product and numerous other things all of which matters are entirely independent of this i issue 1 aue tile chief reason for the existence of the organization in the state of U utah tali is for the benefit of the growers in this state and their efforts should hould be united in the matter to accomplish liis his end and to obtain such a price e for the beets and no more than the market price of sugar amply justifies A purely competitive policy between contending companies might prove so disastrous that the entire industry would be lost if a price were vere off offered ed which prohibited a prof to the manufacturer A number of the foregoing considerations should be called to the attention of the producers so if possible there might le be a unan unanimity in i i ty 0 of f gaita action on and an understanding of the issues issue presented by this controversy the whole thing is merely an outgrowth of one company offering an additional 50 cents per ton there was no dissatisfaction prior to that thai time tho the other companies ire are still unable to reach that figure and make a profit or they then y would undoubtedly do so the fact that citizens citizen in sevier county have offered more for beets produced in order to retain the factory fac torT and permit its operation is not involved whatsoever there should not be a dictatorial spirit on the part of any association as gocr ution to demand what should be paid for commodities produced what W h n thre th re should he be only is a united effort to obtain the mailum mailum price sa til anat t yea reasonable profit cart can be made by all participants S
