Show Millard Countv Chronicle mw Progress August fM O 4b T Old spillway washed out in 1983 flood Picture by Don Dafoe 1979 Old spillway Terry A Hyde and Deborah Jensen stand in the IPP atrium by Charlotte Morrison We h ave been asking you readers for pictures relating to water activities for the past several weeks We have had some good response as you may have noticed in the photos that we have been running with this column We are still interested in more photos both recent and old Because of lire CLG project that the Historic Preservation Commission is working on we have gotten a couple of jungle grows at IPP Miss by Ken Rand When you enter the administration building of the Intermountain Power Plant north of Delta you will see something beyond the receptionists’ desk unusual in the West Desert: a jungle More than 2100 individual tropical plants are carefully arranged in the atrium's 3600 square feet area Walkways made of beach pebbles imported from Mexico wind gracefully among 26 different kinds of exotic ferns shrubs and trees Several Fish ponds with miniwaterfalls dot the atrium The atrium sits in more than 535 cubic yards of soil mix four feet deep A complete drainage system is installed beneath the soil It is rimmed by a clear plastic border at ground level and a balcony The atrium sits directly behind the reception ist desk and is flanked by offices con fcrcnce rooms the cafeteria a control panel training mockup and the new visitor's exhibit center A palm tree almost touch the skylight about 25 feet overhead IPP boasts the largest directly planted atrium in Utah It was in the original design of the $3 billion 1600 megawatt power plant The idea behind the atrium is partly psychological "This was built for the employees to walk through and feel calm" atrium caretaker Deborah Jensen said The atrium is about seven years old Jensen has been tending it for five years “It also controls pollution" she said Some plants are the same ones used aboard the Space Shuttle to help purify the air Jensen said People planning to build atriums elsewhere in Utah have visited the IPP site to study it Utah Power and Light Co just installed an atrium at its Salt Lake City headquarters “And the University of Utah has had people come down" Jensen said It leaves a good impression on visi tors “We thought it would be a nice thing to establish a kind of rapport with people coming in here" Intermountain Power Service Corporation (IPSC) Administrative Manager Terry Hyde said All largo’ plants are given precise water amounts through a drip irrigation system but many plants require Jensen’s daily attention “A lot of them have different water requirements" she said “A lot of them have to have a mist put on them They have to be checked for pests and bugs every day" Trees must be pruned every month A Fishtail Palm will touch the skylight about 25 feet overhead before year's end “It’s done exceptionally well" Jensen said “But when it hits the skylight it will have to be cut out and removed" Shoots will replace it “There are a few plants they put in here as experiments they didn't think would live” she said Three Fern Palms the most rare variety in the atrium arc thriving in the northwest comer Goldfish donated by IPP employees swim in small ponds The Japanese Coy in one pond purchased in American Fork will live for 100 years Jensen said Several avocado plants arc thriving along the walkways “Everybody one year decided they liked avocados for lunch" Jensen said “There was about five of us Those are the seeds We just dug a hole and dropped them in to see what they would do" Millcreek Gardens Inc of Salt Lake City insulted the atrium using the design drafted by IPP architects Black and Veatch Engineering of Kansas City All plants were grown in Florida Among the exotic varieties MillcTeek insulted is Rhaphis Palms valued at more than SI 600 each Zamia Florid ana and Cycas Circinal is are extremely rare Visitors are welcome Call ahead at Ask for Terry Hyde Fair books Farm Bureau schedules local available talent contest The annual Millard County Farm Bureau Talent Find competition will be held at 7 pm August 18 1990 at Delta 6th ward according to Richard Smith chairman of the Farm Bureau’s Young Farmer and Rancher Committee which sponsors the contest County winners in each of the three divisions will compete in the Utah Farm BurcauTalcnt Find at the Utah State Fair on September 8th The divisions are: Junior - Post Office renovates it’s renovation by Evelyn Mallet The Fillmore Post Office recently underwent a renovation of the sidewalks that approach the building Conforming to the new handicap regul every Post Office in the US must have their sidewalks and entrances changed to accommodate handicap access Post Masters have no input as to how this can be done because of the new law The head of the Handicap Organization in Salt Lake City appointed a qualified engineer to assess the Fillmore Post Office entry approach draw the plans and submit them to the Handicap Organization and Postal Authorities They then awarded the contract to a construction company in South Dakota who will do the jobs all over the nation The Postal Dept cannot dispute the plans and construction is done regardless of whether the local postal people approve or not Also the local Post Office must pay the expense it does not come from tax money A parking area far the handicapped was laid on the west side of the Fillmore building with a sidewalk running from there to the entrance Also the old front sidewalk approach was removed and a new on laid with a 7 12 inch high step There were no h and rails installed as yet but postal patron were able to use the newly laid sidewalk as a Friday July 20 1990 According to witnesses several people missed the step and nearly fell On Saturday July 21 at 12:28 pm Gwen Hunter Fillmore's Librarian w as leaving the Post Office her one hand filled with library mail and went to grab the hand rail which was not there She fell off the step and broke the two bones at the wrist in her right arm Force son - cannot project If anyone has any photos at all of any of our irrigation structures especially ones that no longer exist we would like to see what you have Contact the Mu3 come by the museum seum at at 328 W 100 North or call Louise Lyman at 1990 Page give Thomas Jeffer- 3 County jobless rate edges up in June The unemployment rate for Millard County in June 1990 was 46 percent up from the 36 percent rate recorded in the previous month but the same rate as recorded in June 1989 The state unemployment rate for June was 48 percent It was 46 percent in May 1990 These and other figures were part of the Utah Department of Employment Security monthly Labor Market Report published in July The Report indicated there were 3490 nonagricultural wage and salary jobs in the county in June compared with 3340 a year ago an improvement of 49 percent A special section on the 1989 poverty status of Utah was also a part of the Report The section noted Millard County had a population of 12938 in 1989 Of those 682 residents or 130 percent were listed below the poverty level (The poverty thresholds vary with family size According to the Report the poverty threshold in 1989 for a femaleheaded family of four was $12092) Other facts noted in the Report: Joblessness statewide has risen over half a percentage point since the beginning of the year the People entering or labor force has provided momentum to the Utah rise in unemployment - Jobs growth remained strong Utah has added 33400 new jobs to the a growth economy since June 1989 rate of 48 percent - Robust service sector growth continued to generate almost 40 percent of Utah's new jobs Kenneth Arnold filed the first official flying saucer sighting June 24 1947 while flying nearMt Rainier Fillmore ambulance team sponsors course CPR Course The Fillmore Ambulance Team has scheduled aCPR course for September 25 and 27 and October 2 and 4 This class will be on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6 to 10 pm at the Public Safety Building The cost will be $500 per person If you are already CPR Certified and need to recertify (which you should do every year) then you need to attend Oct 2 and 4 classes If you have a 1988 CPR book the cost will be S300 The course is only taught once a year so we urge everyone to sign up for this valuable lifesaving course The deadline to sign up is September EMT Course An EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) course is being scheduled to begin January 9 1991 This will be a 10 week course involving Tuesday evenings and Saturdays This is an excellent course for your own personal knowledge of what to do in an emergency The ambulance team needs volunteers and would like to encourage anyone that would like to join to take this course You can also receive college credit It has been several years between EMT courses here in Fillmore so we hope you will take advantage of the situation The deadline to sign up is September If you are interested in the CPR course andor the EMT course or have any 3 or or Ross Olsen at questions please contact Kent Dalton at or clip out the following coupon and mail it to Kent Dalton Box 658 Fillmore Utah 84631 lam Interested In Qlam Interested in the EMT Course the CPR Course Marne Address City Phone — — V21 YOU DO HAVE A CHOICE!
