nevada in connection with this and the following la Is part of the report of the meeting copied from the beaver county news A delegation of business men from beaver county visited ely ne vada wednesday of last week re turning friday carrying with them a message of cooperation and an inai tation for ely to make use of the beaver ely road tor for auto travelers going east especially until such time as the link in the lincoln highway between their city and salt lake shall be built the delegation was composed of N B neilson karl S cariton carlton J F tolton mr and mrs H T hanks S S atkin and L G clay they were accompanied by E S hinkley of provo president of the utah scenic highway mr air and mrs E R forrest of nephi and E W clay of garrison and F D B gay 0 of the deseret news salt lake city the party arrived at ely late on wednesday evening but a delegation del gatlon gation from the ely chamber of commerce was on hand to meet them after a hurried bite to eat the delegation was escorted to the university club where a rousing meeting was held mr ur 0 G 0 bates president of the ely chamber of commerce presided mr gay was the first speaker he outlined the object of the trip mr tolton was called upon he told what the milford beaver route had to offer in the way of road conditions scenic wonders and hunting and fish ing other speakers during the even ing were J 14 lockhart E W clay H T hanks E 3 8 hinkley county commissioner dark clark V al pittman and N B neilson the ely record devoted two col aunins to the meeting part of which follows the object of the meeting was an by president 0 G bates after which various members of the visiting committee were called upon who presented their request for clos er social and business connection with ely in eloquent and forceful ad dresses the members of the corn com cittee proved to be not only live wires but also most entertaining and convincing speakers ely has been favored by many committees from various sections during the past few years but never before with such a gifted bunch of orators their plan for the immediate fu ture Is to secure assistance of ely in prevailing upon lincoln highway as so clatton to adopt the arrowhead trail from salt lake south to beaver until such time at the lincola high way association has settled upon ui ion a definite plan tor for its route west from salt lake city they stated that there is a paved highway from salt lake south for a distance of more than seventy alvs miles and from there on to beaver the road Is well graded and graveled and that the road from beaver to milford and baker to ely Is in splendid condition and would be greatly improved dur ing the present summer through beaver county they stated that while this road Is considered longer than the present route of the lincoln highway the drive can be made from salt lake to ely in considerably less time which after all is to the most im matter to be considered as it Is toe the hours that count instead of the miles they presented ft a blowing glowing picture bf of the many natural wonders ot of southern utah which at tit the present time Is attracting almost as many tourists as the yellowstone park much of this travel they state is now coming into southern utah over pikes peak and ocean to ocean highway from colorado and Is rout ed through from green river to price and thence west without going A to salt lake and they expressed the opinion that much of the travel com ming from the west could also be routed from ely through tp milford 1 ito coq T r PI av ilk and beaver into southern utah in stead of via salt lake city as it ha hat been for many years past in as much as the pikes peak and ocean to ocean highway carries all of the travel emanating from the central states south of the lincoln highway it naturally pre a new and large field for the securing of travel bound tor for the coast which could take its choice of routes from ely west this road runs from beaver to richfield salina and price to green river the railroad company I 1 now spending about 2 in the building of a string of hotels in southern utah to accommodate tourist travel and good roads are bo be ing added to those already built to all of the interesting canyons fishing preserves and also to the brink ot of the grand canyon of the colorado an extensive campaign of advertising Is also under way hence it la is expected that additional thousands of tourists will visit that section during the corn ing season after the visitors had so ably and eloquently presented their case F M dark clark chairman of the board of coun ty commissioners stated that he wa wat personally familiar with a consider able portion of southern utah and realized that it would soon be a mec mee ca tor for tourists he was of the opinion that the visitors could depend upun residents ot of this section to do all within their power to aid in better and closer road connections aa as not only southern utah but ely would be greatly bene fitted by such an un der taking J M lockhart and vail pittman also strongly endorsed the plan 01 ol the visitors for or closing connection with southern utah the visitors were the guests of the chamber next day and were feted and taken over the country they were royally treated by everybody |
