Show NEW WHOM IN ON cedar city may 26 through scenic highlands and gorges of the zion rational Iati onal park region which pre had known only the tread of an occasional cowpuncher or sheep herder parry brothers of cedar city have conducted in safety the initial due pack train of the 1923 season in effect the trip was an exploratory expedition as but little of the coun try traversed had ever been visited by touring parties and much of it had never been reached except by a very few pioneer cattle and sheep men from the time the pack train climbed the steep ascent of dry can yon east of the arrowhead trail about eighteen miles south of cedar city until it emerged through adoth er slit in the mountains near gratton grafton on the virgin river a few miles be low the main entrance to zion park the party was tor for the most part in country known only to a few pioneer guides and it the opinion of the members of the party Is correct the country traversed offers more in the way of scenic attractions than any similar area yet explored in the state and probably in the entire west many of the scenic features are embraced in that part of 0 zion nation al park that Is not been seen by park via vis igors or in what Is generally termed the great west canyon district ev en among the majority of 0 the rest resi dents of the region it had been re ported that the great west canyon was inaccessible but after several attempts to negotiate the canyon walls and diligent inquiry among early settlers it was learned that a few of the early pioneers knew a means of ingress and with one of them as a guide the party finally reached the floor of the canyon the hazards encountered however are indicated in the tact fact that two pack horses tumbled the mountain slopes on the may ay into the canyon fortunately the packs saved the an emals from serious injury although not from painful bruises the party was headed by C G chance parry but even to him most of the country visited was new to avoid unpleasant difficulties in the erness of canyons and peaks walter L beatty of toquerville who has punched cattle in the south southwest ern wil wilderness derne ss tor for tw twenty 0 nty years 0 01 1 longer accompanied the party at a guide other members of 0 the party were mr and mrs thomas D gabot of boston and your correspondent the entire country covered except for the floor of the main canyon of the park and a few miles along north creek is accessible only on horseback or on foot the route followed was up dr canyon to the head down timber creek to la verkin creek up la ver kin creek to the head through a nar row gorge rivaling zion narrows ov er the divide into hop valley through park and potato valleys to the west rim of the great west canyon series back through potato and park val leys and down north creek to wll wil son s ranch up north creek and ac cross the divide into coal pits can yon and from there through numer ous unnamed canyons and over un named divides and mountains into what was designated by the members of the party as the phantom valley of the great west canyon region re turning almost to wilson s ranch the party then followed unnamed streams and ridges to tho the virgin riv er valley near gratton grafton and then tol fol lowed the main road and trail through zion canyon with a side trip on horseback up canyon to the ruins of cliff dwellings from the time the party left cedar city until the return about mlle were covered on oil horseback and by automobile aside from the explore eions on foot and ten days were re quiren tor for the trip the distance covered by horse and pack was ap proximately miles the party re turning from zion canyon to cedat city by automobile with the ex of that part of the journey into great west canyon the are sate safe tor for pach pack train parties and can be accomplished with little biscom mon v 44 leq w tort fort even by tenderfeet tender teet parry Broth brother erv a e cow now makins makine arrangements for improving trail conditions through the region and ex hect to establish regular pack train service for tourists through dry tim ber and la Ls verkin canyons to the west rim of the great west canyon and dowa down to the floor of zion canyon this trip can be made by pack train wily easily in a week palt alt lake lao tribune sah dusti he live amt |
