Show AMONG STRANGERS the pathetic end of a stranger in a strange land when I 1 apt to the depot half an hour ahead of time or when I 1 am compelled to wait for an hour or two at somo junction says a writer in acho new york sun I 1 like to bo social with my fellow victims hang tho man who makes a churl of himself under any circumstances particularly when ho travels eight or ten of us had been thrown off at a railroad junction in indiana to wait for two hours and it ten minutes before wo were all talking visiting smoking and yarning all but one I 1 am of course speaking of the men aho ladies held the sitting room while we took the platform this one was a middle aged man who took his valise and sat down at the far end of thu platform as it to get as far from us as he could everybody noticed his action and he was put down as a sour minded chap who could have added nothing to our comfort wo simply did by him as he did by us let him severely alolu about ten minutes before train time I 1 noticed that the man was asleep I 1 made bold to approach him and call out but ho did not move going closer the peculiar pallor of his faco alarmed mo and in another minute I 1 discovered that be was dead he had passed away while ho slept when we came to lift him up what do you suppose wo found ho had been writing in a notebook note book with a pencil and the last lines he had written were A stranger in a strange land and sick unto death and yet no one has a word of sympathy no one will even come near me may god forgive them for being so stony I 1 hope that by tomorrow to morrow but no tomorrow to morrow ever came to him it came to all the rest of us but come as often as it may none of us will ever feel just right toward ourselves we had misjudged him |
