Show traditional Non-traditional student becomes legend J I i hIb hI- hI hIL iW L l' l 1 Ie I 1 it It Kr t k i 9 b j 4 I t t 2 a I Submitted photo Still spry Ed Lile is the Horizon photo editor Paul Stevenson Staff Writer OR 12 years Ed Lile Ule has been beena FOR F a photo journalist on the Horizon staff He currently is serving ing as photo editor Although Lile We is what is commonly commonly com corn termed a traditional non student he has adapted to college college college col col- col- col lege life with more zeal than a schoolboy to a mud puddle I like being around the younger people Lile said I enjoy the college atmosphere II Lile We said he likes because it is easier to get to know people in a college environment Ule Lile turned 72 years Sunday April 25 and that does not daunt his positive attitude The slim white crested photo jour jour- contends that a vital key to remaining youthful is to associate associate associate as as- oneself with active people Lile graduated from Granite High School in 1 1939 39 As World War 11 erupted he entered the armed forces and served sewed with a photo reconnaissance group while stationed with the Air Force in England He was recalled to active duty during the Korean War Lile We sewed served 38 years of active and reserve duty in the military retiring in 1981 as a master sergeant Thirty-one Thirty of those years were spent in the Air National Guard He earned numerous awards such as th the Minute Man Trophy in 1965 for outstanding work in public relations In 1981 he won an Air Force commendation medal for outstanding work in photo journalism He attended the U of U between between between be be- tween 1947 and 1951 coming within one quarter of a bachelors bachelor's degree in English before withdrawing He began his learning learning learning learn learn- ing pursuit at in January 1981 when he was 60 years old Sin Since attending Lile tile has served in numerous student positions positions posh lions including associate editor of the college newspaper report rePOrt- layout ing editor Executive Council Council Coun Coun- cil as Vice President of Publications Publications lions managing editor and photo editor He also has made the Deans Dean's Team National Deans Dean's list and has been included in the Who's Who Directory of Junior Colleges three times u c Im very proud to be a student student student stu stu- stu- stu dent at n Lile said Currently he has amassed credit hours I 1 could have three associates associate's degrees by now but only one thing has held me up math 1051 I could never quite see why I would have to take college al algebra algebra algebra al- al gebra when Ive I've never needed to use it in my type of work Besides school endeavors Lile keeps busy with other activities He has been an International Association Association Association As As- of Lions Clubs Club's member member member mem mem- ber for 35 years and editor of their Lions Tale for magazine r- r 15 years He has been the tour coordinator at Temple Square for seven seyen years every Sunday without chan changing g shifts Establishing goals is a large part of Liles Lile's life Right now my goals are to todo todo todo do the things I want to do to improve myself being involved involved involved in in- being around people doing things n he said The challenges for me are learning staying active and being a better better better bet bet- ter me Whatever Ive I've tried to todo todo todo do Ive I've tried to do my best |
