Gunnis gunnison bil bri and the sublimity of the royal gorge twenty eight hours ride brout brought lit us to the ancient city of PUEBLO Ancient because it is supposed posed t to abea be a littlemore little more than a hundred years old and a L city in the western states of america a hundred years old is decidedly ancient 2 years tears ago pueblo consisted of a few mexican huts built of and was innocent of knowing anything about the world but blit some roman catholic priests found this collection of huts or plaz piazzas zas and tau taught lit the sli simple simpie native the forms of th their thein ir own falm faim faith falth subsequently precious metals were discovered covered d is in the mountain ranges which occasioned a rush from the eastern states and as pueblo was not far from some of the richest prospects population its increased the railroads followed on the heels of the sturdy miner anxious to bear away the precious ore released from its rockbound vaults by his tireless blows to parts to where it could be made into coin and so take part in the worlds commerce pueblo is now called a prospering r town of about population ma ula uia tion kept up by its railroads and steel works we had made up our minds to visit these steel works but learned that they ikee were not in operation As we had several hours to lay over here we expected mohave to have a dull time but DUL looking off to the northwest we veo saw about a mile and a half distant a fine three story building on inquiry we learned it was the STATI grato AS asylum vor FOR til all aun aue issa INSA IX SANE saxe why not visit that our friends had often said we would eventually go to the asylum and now was athance a chance to make inake their prophecy true we went the building is a magnificent structure facing the south with a foundation of light colored sandstone surmounted mol moi anted G ay a superstructure three stories storie high hlo made of brick i the main building Is 56 s x 46 feet having its greatest extent north and ana south the three floors of this division of the building are arc divided into six rooms on each floor conne connected eted by fine halls thesis this is the executive department part ment back of the main building are the servants quarters where the cooking washing etc is done in the basement of orthis this division are two boilers of sixty horse power each which furnish heat for the whole bul bui building bullying laing but this is not all an engine is attached and yards away a well has been sunk in the old bed of the arkansas river A pump run bythe hythe by the engine above mentioned forces the water wafer of it through a pipe p ip e over seven seen hundred yards long a and aud furnishes w ater for the whole es besides irrigating the gardens lawns and trees surrounding the building on each side of the main structure is a wing awing 34 x 88 feet with its greatest extent east cast and west A hall runs run through the centre of each win wing lengthways of lt ltv which widens into large macilda rooms lighted by ous windows ja wran ed on each side of these thebe am ara effic hhie the wards bards of convenient size light likht airy gad ard plea sant on t the he first floor are 20 wards in each wing on the second and third floors only 20 00 rooms on each Th the wings ewings described are flanked by other wings 40 x 86 feet having their greatest extent north and south spacious dining halls occupy the south ends of the floors in three divisions with pantries and wash rooms adjacent while in fil the north ends of the divisions named are bath rooms and cells cell with cement floors in which refractory frac tory patients are confined the ceilings are all high the wards roomy and cheerful and everything scrupulously clean it will be seen that the tho asylum can accommodate a very large number of patients but at present there are only inmates 65 males 40 fer fe nales males the majority of these unfortunates are of fore foreign n birth and largely transients it M has therefore been beell difficult for the authorities to keep a record of the causes which led to the insanity of the inmates we were told however that it is licentiousness generally ene rally raily cause caused d b by y dissipation and licentiousness on the whole the building is a grand and imposing structure and so far has cost the state but the west wing however is not yet completed and another another appropriation must be made bythe by the state before it can be finished the establishment owns 88 acres of land the greater part of which is in front of the buildings building sloping gloring gently towards the south on th this s farm they raise their vegetables etc A portion of the land is set out in forest trees which add a charm to the surroundings the institution is under the direction of dr tombs a very genial nial gen tieman aleman of acknowledged a ability 1 clity and wide experience as a physician the asylum is a credit to the state of colorado and will stand as a glorious monument in memory of pie who were generous enough to provide such comfortable quarters for the unfortunates in their midst respectfully B IV II 11 rob
