Show DISTANCE LENDS enchantment public favor is a fickle thing the favorite of today may be but a fallen idol tomorrow with the masses all fields beyond look green and distance lends enchantment to the view the average american of today is not willing to grow up with the country but is prone to leave for pastures new and pull a desert region up by the roots the mining man with a proven and developed country all around him flies the coop if he hears of an alleged find in some distant field where great privations must be experienced before he can even hope for profitable returns surrounded by arid plains and afflicted with trials of the desert he will work harder to make a dollar than he would to harvest a small fortune at home today we find this man and the thousands of his ilk in idaho tomorrow he will be in nevada and the following day in arizona they are all camp bAil builders ders but they never realize what they might have made if they had devoted the same energy and expended the same money in the development of mines and prospects near at nome there is not a mining state in tho the union that would not have attained a high er degree of mineral productiveness had its mining men been stay at homes instead of chasing every will o the wisp that shot athwart their vision take utah for in stance third in the ranks of mineral producing states no better mining state exists and her advantages are many compared to some of the isolated sections of the west her mines are great and yit yet our people p e ople have but a dim conception of her really magnificent mineral resources and for the reason that no special effort has has been or is made to prospect the mountain mountain mountair moun tair ranges the canyons and hidden recesses of this inland empire which should an army of ten thousand prospectors be turned loose to pry into the hidden secrets of the hillsides hill sides and cliffs would reveal to the world metallic treasure which would equal if not eclipse any of the truly wonderful discoveries made in sister states which have startled the mining and financial world of late with all of her great mines and dividend payers utah has been but little prospected as yet and still we have a dozen camps and districts within the confines of the state any one of which have produced more than have any of the new camps of the west which have been in the limelight of P public bublic attention during the past four or five years men of means claiming utah as their residence have failed to realize the magnitude of their home camps and in new and distant districts fairly rave over the production of a few tons of ore when such camps as park city bingham eureka mammoth mercur newhouse frisco alta stockton kimberly ophir and american fork made a greater output daily than do the majority of the new and distant camps over which the general public is now deliriously wild look at park city whose daily output would make a fortune for any reasonable man consider bingham whose possibilities can easily be figured up into thebie the billions and for the treatment of whose ores alone the greatest reductions plants in the world are now being built take a look at alta whose daily tonnage would give palpitation pi tation of the heart to the residents of some sagebrush camp could the credit be given to their prospects and do not overlook eureka and mammoth camps which daily send trainloads train loads of crude ore to the valley smelters shelters sm elters and whose payrolls amount to more than monthly and then in the minds eye give thought to other camps and districts mentioned and compare their enormous output with that of some of the new mining camps of this intermountain region where excited people are spending their money like water because perchance ore has been found which contains a goodly amount of the precious metals any of which could be more than duplicated by any number of our old home bonanzas and yet in utah camps there is not the activity the enterprise and the persistent endeavor that should prevail in our mountains and in our canyons the effort is not being made to find the hidden ledge the chambers of gold silver copper and lead that there should be and no small army swarm the hills in toilsome search of 0 mineral wealth yet to be discovered and for the reason that the migrating craze has seized upon the masses of the miner and prospector to whom distance lends enchantment chant ment to the view and who always see greener pastures beyond |
