Show ALMIGHTY MORGAN. In olden times there was a saying that to be a Roman was greater than to be a king. In modern times the saying with a slight paraphrase roads, "to be a Morgan is greater than to be a king." It is probably true that J. Pierpont Morgan is, in his influence, the most powerful man on earth! It is said that he has made combines and floated enterprises which agggregate $4,500,000,000, or more than all the metallic money of the world. His influence in the financial world is all-encompassing. Pie commands all the financial centers ot the world. As explained his method is this: Sup. pose, for instance, it is determined to place under one management half a dozen connecting railroads. The amount required to gain control of each one is ascertained and a contract secured from each company that if on or before a certain day the amount is forthcoming the transfer will be made. Then a circular letter is sent to the bankers of this country, Great Britain and the continent, which informs each one that such a combine is about to be launched; that the stock will be so much in so many shares; that the receiver of the letter may safely recommend the stock to their depositors depos-itors at a specified price; that the banker may sell at that price and on receipt of the money from him the stock will be supplied, and he, the banker, will be allowed 5 per cent on all sales that he may negotiate. This makes every banker Mr. Morgan's agent, and people respond to his letter because thus far he has never made a failure. One after another of the great industries come under his sway; one after another the railroad lines; one after another the steam lines on the ocean. If he Keeps on another ten years ho will be liable, for a final performance, to take in the earth. |
