Representatives Representa-tives of the Ricks academy and tho Idaho Falls high school met In debate Friday nifht Each school selected two teams, so that there were two debates the same evening, ono In Roxburg and one In Idaho Falls. Tho Ricks academy won In both debates. The question was. "Resolved. That Idaho should enact an initiative and referendum law similar to article IV of the stato constitution of Oregon." In the Rcxburg debate, tho Ricks academy had the negative, and In Idaho Falls tho Ricks acadomy had tho affirmative. The debates are part of a series of contests of the Idaho high school league. Tho academy hero will likely i moel the Albion state normal school In the near future. The representatives of the Ricks academy were: First team, Fayette Stevens, Vera Kerr and Annie Soon: second team, John Smith. Arthur Harris and Andrew Nelson. All are senior students, nnd about equal Ju rorensic ability. The judges in the Roxburg Rox-burg debate wcro Attorney J. D. Mlllsaps. Superintendent Humphreys of tho industrial indus-trial school, both of St. Anthony, and Professor Jame3 T. Worlton, Sugar City. At tho closo of tho debate a dar.co was given in Armory hall In honor of the visitors. This morning the academy brass band, under Professor C. J. Enyer, and a largo number of the students and teachers met the returning victors from Idaho Falls and marched up town. The Bergener military brass band of Rcxburg will likely play at the G. A. R. encampment at Salt Lako City this fall. Professor Borgcner hap been makifig arrangements ar-rangements to this end. The band has Just lately been provided with a fine set of new Instrument.-!, and every member la enthusiastic about the outlook for the future of the organization. It Is understood under-stood that the local band will rccclvo $1000 for their services, besides the pleasure pleas-ure and distinction of such a trip. Tho industrial school band of twenty-two twenty-two boys, from St. Anthony, went to Bolso this week and played before the legislature. Tho ochool is asking for a large appropriation, and mado an extra effort to call attention lo their needs. Superintendent Humphreys Is doing a great work for the boys and girls of tho school, and is beloved by every one of them. Tho Webster-Woodmansee company of this cJty distributed 100 pounds of flour to each of the widows and also families of absent missionaries, whoso names wcro furnished by tho ward bishops. This company makes annually Hhoral gifts to the poor and needy of Roxburg. Another Democrat came to town this week, when a fine boy arrived at tho homo of Mr. und Mrw. C. G. Keller on Thursday night. Tho proud father distributed dis-tributed a specially prepared lot of cl-garn cl-garn to his many frlonds and patrons on Friday. Dr- A. L, Brown and J. Dcane. Bountiful, Bounti-ful, wero guests of Dr. Rich of Rcxburg this week. R. G. Archibald Is preparing to build a handoomo residence on his Main street property this spring. He will build on th! corner formerly occupied by tho Poo-pic's Poo-pic's store. The store building will be removed by Contractor Henry Rlgby. |
