Show r e Languages f CHRONICLE has had reason this year to congratulate the faculty on many improvements which have been made in the courses of study and in inthe inthe inthe the requirements for admission to the University ty proper In regard to the latter one of the most important changes made has been the extension of requirements requirements requirements require require- ments in foreign language work To Toi i enter the course in arts a student must offer six years of work in foreign languages languages lan lan- an- an in addition to other prescribed f studies To enter the course in science f only two years' years work in language is F required as heretofore Although to tok toone k lone one familiar wi with th the courses previously k offered in III the University it would not notI I seem at first reading that students willbe will willbe willbe be apt to give more attention to the h f languages tl than an before still the probability probability ability s seems ems to be that they will Until recently there were almost no graduates outside of the N Normal orm l class Of OJ the i- i degrees conferred most were in science a few in letters and but one or two in arts Those who received the first- first named degree were men the others women At that time there were very few women who did collegiate wor work while many of those who did were registered as special students N Naturally Naturally atur- atur ally then as the majority of college students were men and as the men were doing work in science the languages languages languages langu langu- ages were somewhat neglected Now however the classes doing preparatory work in language are very large this fact promises well for the advanced work vork in the future and and- the advanced classes in language compare well in numbers with those in other departments departments departments depart depart- ments while the actual rate of increase is much larger A significant fact is that the majority of students s doing work V in In the lang languages ages are women The number number number num- num num num- ber of women taking a regular college course is increasing all the time and it is to be hoped that there will soon be beas beas beas as many degrees conferred upon them themas as upon the men The women of Utah are are gradually awakening to the fact that tha their education is as important as that of the sterner sex and that they are quite as capable of doing good work Another fact to which the people of Salt Lake City seem to td be awakening is that they have a University right in their midst where an earnest student can be educated quite as well as at one of the larger institutions of America Returning to the subject however a word may be said of the value of th the study of a foreign language On One advantage to be gained the gained the knowledge of English obtained in pursuing the course has course has been commented on in a previous article and will therefore therefore-re- re- re quire no discussion here Of course the greatest value of studying a foreign tongue is the knowledge of that language language language langu langu- age itself and this fact does not need discussion Next in importance is the familiarity gained with some of the literature It is always best of course where possible to read the works of an author in the original in order to get the peculiar character of his style unadulterated with that of the translator Then too there are doubtless many students who would never read even a translation of certain works Yorks which it itis itis itis is almost a duty to be familiar with if they did not study the language Courses in Latin I Greek French and German are offered in the University among which Latin holds the most important important important im im- place It is not meant that Latin is better taught than the others but that it is the duty of every student who aspires to become well educated to be familiar with it The respective value of the other courses is determined by the use to which they are put To Toone Toone Toone one intending to travel the modern languages are most valuable while Greek is more valuable to the scholar The CHRONICLE hopes though that the time will come when all of our scholars will have an opportunity to be travelers and all the travelers will be scholars |
