Show THE MEANING OF BAUME the editor of the lamp house organ of the standard oil co of new jersey gives this brief and lucid explanation of the meaning of baume the baume scale so generally used in the oil business was devised in 1768 by antoine baume who used the same general system for developing two distinct scales one for liquids heavier than water and the other for those lighter than water to illustrate 60 degrees B sulphuric acid is heavier than water while 60 degrees gasoline is lighter the two being represented on the baume heavy and light scales respectively the baume light scale was worked out as follows A 10 per cent solution of common salt was prepared and a hydrometer allowed to sink in it the point on the glass at the top of the solution was designated as zero the mark to which the hydrometer sank in pure water was designated as 10 degrees the scale was then extended on th the basis of the degree each representing one tenth of the difference between the marks for the salt solution and the water obviously any liquid lighter than water has baume gravity greater than 10 degrees this in fact is the baume hya hydrometer now used to test the gravity of oil the lower the instrument ment sinks in the oil the lighter the oil As already stated distilled water registers 10 degrees baume while fuel 0 oil may na y range as high as 20 degrees refined oils around 42 degrees and gasoline 60 degrees or more |
