It was also the tenth basketball title for the Pioneers, dating back to 1908. it is meant there By was not one star to carry the success of the squad on his shoulders. This was a team in the finest sense of the word. Sixteen of the 18 Pioneers dressed for the final contest saw action. Of those, nine scored for the favored Purple and White. Pioneers upend Pine View in semi d come-from-behin- By TRACY WILSON "We are a team and Andy Hadfield's free throw at :45 provided a margin. Espelet tied the game at :29 before Lehi called time out and set up for the final drive. Christofferson was fouled on the drive with six seconds remaining and hit the second of two charity tosses for the win. Lindquist, the Pine View golden boy who also showed great skill but a lot of over- - confidence early in the game, had four free throw chances and a final shot at the win from the half-couline, but came up short on all counts. He ended with 23 points to lead all scorers. In the first quarter he had rocked the rim with two thundering dunks that brought the Spectrum to its feet, but as one Lehi coach commented, "He expended so much energy in those two jams that we felt he would run out of gas before the end of the game and that's why we kept our boys fresh with substitutions. When Coach Dave Filimoehala Matt Seth inserted and Sunderland, Kelton Butterfield and Byron Glathar in the first quarter and then started the second period by exchanging Hadfield for Butterfield, there were some heads wagging and wondering if he had lost "it." At 7:22 the starters were back in. Actually, knowing his team was in superb condition, the Lehi mentor substituted early and freely, using 11 players throughout the game. The tempo of the contest was fast and furious as the Panthers sprinted to a quick 0 lead in the first 45 seconds, but then Childs scored two fielders with 27 seconds and Christofferson connected on two of his ten free throws to knot the score at 5. It was tied again at 8 and 12, but then the home town crowd saw Pine View move out by four and build it to a 12 point margin before Lehi closed out the first half to trail by six. 61, 18 ball play- ers, but a team!" was the comment of one Lehi High School basketball player. "And this was a team victory!" added another. The Pioneers had won a contest in the state semifinal at SUU field house in Cedar City Friday over favored Pine View in front of a partisan crowd. Although a record may not exist, writers and Lehi fans are scrambling to see if the win is the best ever. The Pioneers were down to Region 9 champion 64-6- just 3 rt nt 6 with 1:11 remainPine View ing in the semifinal third quarter when Jason Childs launched a field goal from three feet beyond the arc. That was followed by Jason Yates at :24 by a to pull within 13, but the Panthers' leader, Ben Lindquist, answered with one tick on the clock for his own trey to close the period at 55-3- 58-4- points and eight minutes from a date with destiny, or at least the Pine View faithful thought. The real story is told in the final six minutes of the contest as the defending state 3A champions went on a dedicated hunt and scored 16 points while holding the Panthers at 60. In 3 minutes and 39 seconds Braden Cooper scored five, Yates cashed in on three, Mike Christofferson dropped through line five of six from the and bench guard Matt Sunderland, Lehi's secret weapon, bombed a trey. Those 16 points knotted the score at 60. Again it was the pressing, swarming defense and pressure that proved too 16 free-thro- 5-- full-cou- rt much for the opponents. Pine View center Leo Espelet. scored the only Panther points in the final period with a fielder at 6:15, a free throw at 1:57 and the final field goal at :29. Luke Magnusson's short jumper at gave the Pioneers the lead at :57 62-- Although the game was tight most of the way, the outcome never seemed in question as those who have watched the Pioneers this year had confidence in the coaching style of Dave Filimoehala. Saturday at Southern Utah University's Spectrum field house in Cedar City, Union put up a gallant fight staying with the Pioneers for three quarters and seeing the game tied six times with the lead changing hands six. The last tie was at the end of the third quarter when the Cougars' Dusty Olsen hit two of two free throws with 1:13 remaining in the period. Jeff Davenport, Union's ace, failed to connect on two charity tosses with 30 ticks on the clock and the score remained knotted. Then it was Lehi's turn to spend the entire eight minutes at the free throw line as they shot 32 charity pitches in the final stanza and made 22. Mike Christofferson led the way with 12 of 14 to add to his two of two from the third quarter. Union made two of five from the line in the final period and added three field goals and two fielders, but that could not match the 22 free throws by the LHS quint. After Friday night's semi-finPine View, contest against Saturday's win was somewhat lack luster, but the fans still stormed the floor following the final buzzer and celebrated as the players traditionally cut down the net. Christofferson ended the night with 16 points to go along with his 12 from Friday and 10 points from Thursday in the quarterfinal victory over Cedar City, Magnusson did a stellar job with 15 against the Cougars on five from the field and five of six from the stripe. He had only four on Friday and 13 against the Redmen. Jason Childs ripped the nets for 14 on Saturday with three field goals and two from outside the arc for three each. He also added two of two from the line to go along with his 11 on Friday and five on Thursday. Lehi's scoring leader, Braden Cooper, who went into the tournament with a 12.8 average, contributed 13 on Saturday while the Cougar, top guarding Davenport. He did a yeoman job on Friday with 21 while holding Pine View's Ben Lindquist to his average of 21. He was especially noticeable for his self control when Lindquist stole the ball on two occasions and taunted Cooper after rim rattling dunks. Cooper didn't seem to let it phase him as he just went out and did what had to be done with his extra-effo21. On Thursday, the talented junior, tallied 13. Jason Yates, Lehi's quiet and 54-4- v . r" 'V - : unpretentious forward, was always where he needed to be under the basket for rebounds and layups or outside to take pressure off Magnusson or the guards. He ended up Saturday with 10; Friday he totaled 14 and Thursday chipped in 4. Off the bench Seth and Matt Sunderland added a one-twpunch to the Pioneer attack. Seth scored four on Saturday to go with his four against Cedar. Matt didn't score on Saturday but was a decoy from the arc as he had shocked e Pine View on Friday with a trey; he contributed three on Thursday. Other bench players who made a difference in the tournament with points were Scott Thayn, Grant Ellsworth, Andy Hadfield and Kelton Butterfield. As one sportswriter commented, "...Saturday's win also brought up a scary thought Lehi has the guns to make it three in a row next Those guns include year." both Christofferson, Cooper, Sunderlands and Hadfield as well as a host of juniors and sophomores who had respectable seasons this year and some of whom saw varsity action. Cooper added, "This year we put more heart into it; it wasn't given to us, we had to get it as a team." big-tim- Lehi 54, Cedar City 45 10 10 8 17 45 Cedar Lehi 10161612 54 Lehi 64, Pine View 63 Lehi 13 16 13 22 64 Pine View 17 18 23 5 63 1 tceiuona 4 ' 880 North 768-355- 8 Quality Worth Finding 100 East Lehi Mustang Bronco 3rd-4t- h $25 35 50 5th-6t- h 50 Pony Colt 7th-8t- h 60 60 h 10 and under 30 0 yrs. 35 Girls slow-pitc- h Girls last pitch 2 35 4 35 6 35 Be a newspaper carrier!
