Show THE ZEPHYRM ARCH 1990 Merv: I think It's alright for tha present Zephyr: Would vou favor Implementing the two mil Increase In Grand County for education? Feme: they felt It was necessary, I would. Merv: Yes. this Is like getting a voted leeway which gives the school board the authority to Increase the taxes. If Annexing Grand County PAGE 5 F United Cable Television of Moab 89 No. Main Zephyr: Since last fall, there have been numerous proposals bv Green River to construct Incinerators on Grand Count land, annexed bv Green River 259-813- City. How can Grand County citizens have no sav whatsoever In what happens In our countv? Merv: It Is the recommendation of the State that municipalities annex adjoining lands In order to develop, and I dont think that's a bad Idea at all. Zephyr: But theyre cherry stemming Into Grand County as far as five miles east of the river In order to meet certain requirements for Incinerators that require they be awav from bodies of water. We had a referendum a couple of years ago about this; now It seems like Grand County can be bypassed from having a voice. Dave: Your point Is moot to begin with. I know there's been controversy over whether this medical waste Incinerator Is hazardous or not. But I don't think Green River would go for a hazardous waste Incinerator. Whats happening In Green River Is theyre looking at possibilities. This municipal waste recycling plant could be a $185 million facility ... possibly. May never go. But theyre willing to look Into it So we should be thankful to Green River for what theyre doing. We're talking ' big time development here, not parks, or toilets for tourists. And guess who's Moab. going to use the lions share of that money But Countv Is. the Grand mavbe doesnt want that development. point Zephyr: mavbe It does. Either wav It has no voice In the process. If the prevailing attitude In Grand Countv was against development, theres nothing anyone could do about It, And were talking about annexing land miles Inside Grand County. Dave: How many miles? Zephyr: I heard at least five. Merv: Thats right. Dave: Big deal. Youre bringing forth a point that I never dared say, and that Is that people In Grand County dont want development and dont want money. Isn't that just what you said? Zephyr: No. Im saving they should have the choice to decide what happens In their own county. What are the limits to annexation? Merv: So far there Is no objection, because there Is no one there to object If they got to Crescent Junction, they would have the option of baying no. Dave: I just don't view It as a threat; I'm grateful that theyre doing It 6 on HBO CINEMAX COMING IN MARCH Working Girl Jacknife Lean on Me Max Rocks: ELVIS The Naked Gun & MARILYN MONROE Zephyr: But David. Im not talking about economic opportunity. If the Federal Government cherry stemmed 5 miles Into Grand County wouldnt vou hit the roof? Dave: Thats right Zephyr: Im talking about foreign Infringements on vour home countv. Dave: Ive told Moab City to annex lands that would Increase their economic development. I don't have a problem with that Gasoline Prices Recently a citizens' group In St George circulated a petition that government officials look Into the high cost of gasoline In requesting Washington County. Gas Prices In Moab. however, are even higher (6 to 8 cents). Would vou like to comment on Ihla? Dave: The only place I know of which Is higher Is Montlcello, which Is $1 .25flallon. (Editors note: gas prices have Just recently gone down In Montlcello, Zephyr: as low as $1.05.) Feme: Even prices In Soldier Summit are the same as Salt Lake which Is under a dollar. Dave: I don't know. Merv: I think It's wrong. And not Just gas. Its other commodities too. Years ago, I felt It was the Chamber of Commerce's project to get some equity In prices, but I was never able to Interest them In really going at It. They Just didn't want to fight that battle. Ill give you another example. When City Market opened Its new store and the manager gave a talk at Rotary, I asked why the price of a pound of hamburger was more here than In Price. Ami what he said really shocked me; he said It's all based on competition. In Price they compete against Smiths and someone else. Here there Is no competition, so the price Is up. That Is basically what he said. Now when I look this wholo matter up with the Chamber last year, I was told that Moab Is classified as a recreational area, and therefore, the price Is higher. The distributors that sell to Moab will sell at a higher price than you and I can buy at the store In Grand Junction. But the Chamber has never taken that up as a flag, and I feel thats disappointing because I feel It should support the people, not Just the merchants. Re-Elec- tion Zephyr: Would either of vou. Dave and Feme, like to tell us what vour plans for November are? Feme: I dont plan to run for Zephyr: David? I dont know why, but I will run Dave: Yes again. I like Merv, thats why. OK. Thanks.
