Up 259-625- i : Also on the second floor are some of the more Important and vital behind the scenes sections of the museum. The collections for study and future display are housed on steel shelving, In acid free boxes and In bug proof cabinets under the watchful eye of the volunteer curator. On the west side of the upper story Is an office for the curator and others on the volunteer staff. Next to the office Is the libraryarchives with steel shelving to house the books, documents and other archival materials necessary to document and study the collections and provide researchers with accurate Information. The room also serves as the office for the museum publication "Canyon Legacy" established In the spring of 1989 and available to all members of the museum organization. A new computer serves the publication staff and other divisions of the museum. A small workshop occupies the rest of the floor, a place where painting and construction of Items for the :t . A hostess Is on duty at the entrance to greet the visitor and provide Information. Toilet facilities are available near the entrance and they and the building are handicapped accessible. When the space behind the museum was unexpectedly taken over by the Ubrary Board the large Items on display there had to be moved to another location : for storage. Eventually some of these may see the light of day once again In a public display. l DECISION From Its humble beginnings the Dan OLaurie Museum has expanded Into a full blown modern museum dedicated to community service In preservation, Interpretation and display of the Moab and Grand County story. Operating with basic assistance from Grand County, most of the day to day running of the museum Is by volunteers putting In countless hours of personal time. ! Moab AT PETRA we care enough To the rear of the new section at the first floor level Is the history hall completed In 1987. It has a series of panels and glassed In cases that tell the history of the Moab area with artifacts and graphics In thematic sequence. The sequence begins with the Old Spanish Trail, the first European penetration of the region, and goes through the Mountain Men, Exploration, Settlement, Transportation and Early Ufe to give some Idea of how Moab came about and developed. A reproduction of an early Moab kitchen dating about 1907 Is especially Interesting. Other exhibits tell of Farm-Ran- ch Ufe, Communication, Schools, The Law, The Town Blacksmith and Early Medicine. The museum Is open In the summer (May 1 - October 1) 1 to 5 pan. and 7 to 9 pm dally except Sunday. In winter (October 1 - May ; 1) It Is open 3 to 5 pm and 7 to 9 pm Monday through Thursday and 1 to 5 p.m. to 7 and 9 pm Friday and Saturday but closed Sunday.
