We leave from the Layton, Wild Bird Center at 8:00 a.m., every Saturday (unless otherwise noted), rain or shine. Our walks are a great way to introduce children to the world of nature. Bill Fenimore or another local expert leads the walk. We discuss and observe birds, mammals, flowers, butterflies and other nature interests, as we encounter them. The Wild Bird Center “life list” is at 171 different bird species observed during our Nature/Bird Walks, thus far. Helps us add new bird species to the Wild Bird Center list. La Plata is an old silver mine boom ghost town near Monte Cristo. Jim Poulter will lead this trip on private property that he owns. Since the area is private the Nature/Bird Walk is especially good. See moose, elk, deer, as well as beautiful mountain blue birds, warblers, the forest grouse, vireos and many other mountain bird species. We will see beautiful wildflowers and butterflies. Jim will tell us about the history of La Plata. We end this trip with a fun picnic lunch. Bring your favorite treat and something to drink. We will leave the Wild Bird Center at 7:00 a.m. The Layton Wild Bird Center is located at 1860 North 1000 West, Layton. Exit 335 off I-15, located across from the Barnes Noble BookStore. 21 Safety Items No Home Should Be Without – Safety council makes recommendations The Utah Safety Council advises residents to take an inventory of their home safety items so that you can be prepared to battle any emergency. According to the council, the following is a list of items that are essential to your family’s safety. 1. Smoke Detectors: Install smoke detectors on each floor and outside each bedroom. Test detectors once a month, and change the batteries when you adjust your clocks in the spring and fall. 2. Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Carbon Monoxide kills approximately 40 Utahns each year. Place a CO detec tor near the bedrooms in the home. 3. Radon-Detector Kit: Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that is caused by the breakdown of ura nium in soil. A radon testing kit is available from the Utah Safety Council, or from Home Depot. 4. Night Lights: Simple, inexpensive night-lights can pre vent late night falls. flashlights, batteries, and a battery-powered radio. 17. NOAA All-hazard Alert Radio: This radio will help you in a weather emergency. You will pick up the fre quency of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which will include instructions on whether or not to evacuate. This type of radio is available at your local hardware store. 18. Emergency Phone Numbers: Include doctors, poison control, police, and fire departments, and place them in an area that is readily accessible. 19. Tested Appliances: Appliances using gas or electric ity should bear a certification mark from a qualified organization. 20. Personal Protective Equipment: Be sure to keep safe ty goggles, work gloves, and face masks for those doit-yourself projects. 5. Sensor Lights: Outdoor motion-sensor lights can help you see at night, and scare off intruders. 21. Tagged Shutoffs: Know how to shut off gas, water, and electricity valves, and make sure they are properly marked. 6. Rubber Suction Bath Mats/Slip Resistant Throw Rugs: These will help keep you steady in and out of the bathtub. Grab Bars: Grab bars help you get in and out of the tub, and are available at most hardware stores. 9. Handrails: Every set of stairs should have sturdy handrails securely mounted on both sides. 10. Deadbolt Locks: Install a pick-and-drill proof lock on every entrance to your home. 11. Ground-fault Circuit Interrupters: GFCI’s stop the electricity before it can leak out and harm you. Use them throughout your home, especially in the kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room. 12. Fire Extinguishers: Have them in areas of y our home that are prone to fires, such as in the laundry room, near the kitchen, garage, etc. 13. First-aid Kit: Make sure each member of your family knows where it is located, and be sure to check expi ration dates on you medical supplies. private club for members 14. Flashlights: Keep flashlights throughout your home, and check them regularly to make sure the batteries work.
