Show May 15 03.qxd 12/7/2021 4:01 PM Page 1 The OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Your Community Newspaper Weber Correctional Facility Inmate Escapes in Huntsville Earlier this month, James Castell, an inmate of the Weber County Correctional Facility, bolted while on work duty in Huntsville Town. A small number of low risk inmates, under the supervision of a correctional officer, were working at the Forest Service compound located at the west end of 1st Street. Around 1:00 p.m., Castell, a 44year-old white male ran, leaving behind the officer to maintain control of the remaining work crew. Back up help was called in. Finishing up a call in Eden, Sargent Ryon Hadley arrived in Huntsville and began a search of the area. After scouring the beaches near the point, he returned to the center of town in his patrol car where he noticed a male, fitting the description of the suspect, near the southwest corner of the LDS chapel parking lot. Weber County Offering Cash for Noxious Weed Hadley stated, “Facing a fenced area, the suspect’s bright orange, prison shirt could be seen hanging out at the bottom underneath a sweatshirt the man had apparently slipped on over the top. Before Castell realized what was going on, I pulled up behind him, jumped out of the patrol car, brought his feet out from underneath him, and handcuffed him without incident.” Compiled by Shanna Francis Ogden Valley News Chelsea Keefer of Huntsville is the Utah State Tumbling Champion on Floor and Trampoline after competing in the Utah State Tumbling Championships at Weber State University. A tiny Valley girl took, not one, but two State titles. Miss Chelsea Keefer of Huntsville is the Utah State Tumbling Champion on Floor and Trampoline, competing at level eight all around. After a great season, Keefer came into the meet as the favorite to win State. Chelsea is flying off to Grand Rapids, Michigan for a Regional competition to try and qualify for Nationals in her third event, Double Mini. Chelsea will be competing in Sacramento, California for the National title in July. Chelsea trains at Athletic Edge Tumbling and Trampoline Academy in Pleasant View three times a week. Head coach Justen Millerbernd states that he is very proud of her. Her parents note that Chelsea loves her coach, and looks forward to training everyday. The talented gymnast also takes ballet two times a week at Ballet West Academy in Salt Lake City. Keefer is in the 4th grade, and an honor student at St. Joseph’s Catholic School. Athletic Edge Tumbling and Trampoline Academy is owned by Halli Russell and is ranked as the number one gym in the state this year. She states that she enjoyed seeing a lot of small towns while participating in regional events, and that the shorter races increased her desire to Ogden Canyon Clean Up Scheduled for May 31 Weber and Davis Counties are sponsoring a “cash for woad” program, aimed at eliminating dyer’s woad, a state listed noxious weed. The weed’s yellow blossoms can be seen along roadsides and blanketing fields and deserted lots during the spring season. By mid summer the blossoms turn into prolific deep purple or black looking seeds. Mark Saturday, May 31 on your calendar. The Ogden Canyon Club is inviting the community to participate in the annual Spring Canyon Clean Up. Volunteers are needed to help pick up litter and pull dyers woad in Ogden Canyon. The greater the number of people volunteering, the greater the results will be. Group participation is welcome. Please meet at the Alaskan Inn at 9:00 a.m. Bags and vests will be provided. A picnic will be sponsored by The Oaks at 12:00 noon. There will be prizes for participants! The Ogden Canyon Club is a non-profit, privately funded organization. Membership is open to everyone. The team, named “On the Run,” completed the 26.2-mile course in four hours, twelve minutes, and thirty seconds. Participating in last year’s event, Shelly and her daughter Roseann found the Ogden Marathon to be a fun family activity, so she “conned” other family members into running in this year’s marathon. Shelly Hyden began running three years try running longer distances in more challenging marathons. Shelly ran in the Top of Utah Marathon in Logan last year. “I enjoy running in Utah because it gives me a reason to come home again.” According to the team—all members of the Wilson family—“This year’s Ogden Marathon was great.” The race was Shelly’s MARATHON cont. on page 3 FOR THE PRESERVATION & RESTORATION OF OGDEN CANYON Weber County will be signing out bags that can be filled with the noxious weed.
