Show HOUSE SPEAKER JOE MARTIN TO ADDRESS REPUBLICANS The Republican campaign will get into high gear September 23 with a rally in Salt Lake when the main speaker will be Joseph W. Martin Jr., of Massachusetts, speaker of the House of Representatives. Repre-sentatives. The rally will be held at the Hotel Utah at 8 p. m. Short talks also will be given by Congressmen William A. Daw son and Douglas R. Stringfellow. Speaker Martin, who has been a member of the house for 30 years, has had a notable career in the Republican party. He was first elected as a member of the Sixty-Ninth Congress in 1924 and has served continuously ever since. He served as permanent chairman chair-man if the Republican national conventions in 1940, 1944, 1948 and 1952 which exceeded the former record held by Senator Henry Cabot Ca-bot Lodge Sr., who served three times. Speaker Martin also has served as chairman of the Republican Republi-can congressional committee. He was elected minority leader of the Seventy-sixth and succeeding Congresses Con-gresses except the Eightieth and Eighty-third, and which he was elected speaker. Martin will come to Salt Lake from Reno where he speaks earlier in the day, and will go to Grand Junction, Colo., on September 24 for a noonday address there. |
