Later that day, in their car, the Jones visited Pipe Spring National Monument. Here they were on a real Indian reservation, and a beautiful one. Under the cottonwoods at Pipe Springs the Jones toured a restored Western fort and pioneer homestead. Rangers dressed for the part showed ur &$& " S picknicking in the shade while children dived and splashed through sand the miles of ocean surf-lik- e dunes. It looked like a fantasy land to The famous outlaw. Butch Cassidy, grew up in Circleville, drive Utah, a scenic two-honorth on Highway 89 from Kanab. Tom McCarty, who would later team with Butch in their Telluride Bank robbery, killed three Navajo boys in Grass Valley, just north of Kanab. These murders led to the Indian Uprising of 1874. Later, McCarty rode into Kanab with Matt Warner, the third member of the Telluride Bank holdup gang. McCarty and Warner left their pal, Josh Sweat, in Kanab to recover from bullet wounds suffered in Mexico during a cattle rustling "vacation. ft X WWS'S. v '"v &. 4 - $."- ,x Hv'.. i, ... if Xsii .j.'ft' ,, vacation in the west is incomplete without a trip to Lake Powell the nation s best place for water skiing, fishing, swimming and boating with 1,900 miles of shoreline. A visitors how cheese was made, how ladies sewed and cooked, and how cowboys operated a cattle ranch on the frontier there more than 100 years ago. In the gift shop Mrs. Jones couldnt resist buying a Storm Pattern Navajo blanket. It became apparent that even with help from their time machine, the Jones might vacation for years and never leave the vicinity of Kanab. Mr. Jones had heard rumors of horse races, a horse show, maybe even a rodeo in the fall, plus almost weekly tournaments at the golf course. Mrs. Jones couldnt wait for the Kane County Fair. And the kids wanted to go fishing in one of Americas premiere trout steams, the Colorado River above Lees Ferry. The summer weather in Kanab proved mild. For really hot fun, the Jones drove 65 miles east to an outrageous watersports area with more shoreline than the entire U.S. Pacific coast, Lake Powell. First the Jones booked passage on a tour boat running from Wahweap Marina to the worlds largest natural arch, Rainbow the East and West Rims. The Jones kids were ready for an exotic backpacking adventure. One morning when no thunderstorms were predicted, the Jones family hiked into the Virgin River Narrows. They thought they had seen almost everything, but the Narrows convinced them otherwise. How would they ever describe to their friend in Manhattan p the sensation of standing in a murmuring clear river at the bottom of a gorge deep enough to swallow the World Trade Center Towers, and narrow enough they could hold hands and touch the opposite walls? That night in Kanab the kids went to a movie, then went dancing. Mr. and Mrs. Jones thought they might finally spend a quiet evening in their motel room. But the cool summer Bridge. Back at Wahweap that afternoon, the family rented a houseboat and voyaged toward the far end of Lake Powell, nearly 200 miles away. They took the time machine along, and set it to make months. Lake Powell whet the Joneses appetites for fantastic scenery and for hiking instead of water skiing. A 45 minute drive west of Kanab brought them into Zion National Park. They shin-dee- photographed the worlds largest monolith, the Great White Throne, then began hiking the designated trails up form the canyon bottom to See VACATIONING, Page 20 ?& .if ' "!"v c,WNfeflNtoMMkL- - JL, FOUR SEASONS MOTOR INN Your headquarters for .11 g I ' ' I f - 1 Richard's We open mS FAMILY RESTAURANT a Family Restaurant day from 6:30 a.m. til 10 p.m. is truly each U.S. Highway 89 m FOUR SEASONS & i the most colorful and memorablel vacation ever. mmeHk 1 ..... at Richard's Restaurant KT- - iff tv Ffj; r V ,wj 5ftT U Off kl'. & ffi. - Mr- Indian Jewelry Black Hills Gold Authentic Indian Pottery many other interesting items Kanab, Utah 84741 - 801-644-26- 35 !? |
