Snowing on Jerusalem in Kanab Canyon to be a good one, perhaps the extra time the inclement weather forced upon the production enabled it to achieve the epic greatness the film still brings to the screen today. Anticipation was a palpable object on the set that morning in Kanab Canyon, five miles north of Kanab. George Stevens, director of the American classic, Giant, was about to finish the filming for his epic production, The Greatest Story Ever Told. The set directors had everything in place for the final Jerusalem street scene. The actors, actresses, and extras were in place. Just as Stewart gave the call for ACTION and the cameras began to roll, huge snowflakes began to fall. CUT, Stewart yelled and looked to the darkening sky. Besides the incredible scenery in the Kanab area, one of the reasons it was chosen as a film location was its nearly perfect climate. But this fall, the word was nearly, not perfect. An unusual fall storm was settling in and the set had to be abandoned for the day. The next day, an attempt was made to sweep the snow away from the set in order to continue the filming, but once again, the skies darkened and snowflakes began to fall. This time the storm did not abate. Winter came early to Kanab Canyon so Stewart packed his movie cameras, lights and equipment, and return to Hollywood. The final scenes for The Greatest Story Ever Told were filmed the following spring, delaying the release of the movie nearly a full year. Although under George Stewarts direction the movie was nearly certain on-locati- on History Continued from Page 8 The town of Kanab evolved through raids by Navajo war parties and treaties with them, through battles to dam Kanab Creek and the floods that washed the dams away. A few Mormon pioneers practiced polygamy, and Federal Marshals harassed them through the 1890s. The great showman, Buffalo Bill, visited Kanab with an entourage of English Noblemen. Zane Grey roped a mountain lion on the Powell Plateau. Kanab incorporated in 1884. Allen Frost was elected Kanabs first mayor. Doctor Harvey arrived about 1894, but like his successor, Dr. Lyons, their practices did not survive in a town where during an entire year not one death was recorded. Dr. U. H. Norris arrived in 1906 after the San Francisco earthquake destroyed his practice there. Dr. Norris remained in Kanab for over 30 years, until young Dr. George R. Aiken established Kanabs first hospital March 4, 1936. A Locomobile and a Thomas Flyer drove from Salt Lake City to Kanab in June of 1909. They became the first automobiles to visit the North Rim of Grand Canyon three days later. The expedition, an early tourism promotion invented by E. D. Wooley of Kanab, burned 10 gallons of gas yery 30 miles and wore out nine tires. Teddy Roosevelt gave E. D. Wooley and C. J. Jones permission to graze buffalo in Grand Canyon as part of an experiment to cross the buffalo with Galloway cows and create a new commercial breed. The buffalo were corralled in the Kanab Tithing Office lot in the center of town before being herded toward Grand Canyon. Because the buffalo had become sorefooted while being driven over Cedar Mountain, they were shod with oxen shoes in Kanab. But the buffaloes took no interest in the cows, and the experi- ment failed. Some of the buffaloes still remain in House Rock Valley. In 1922, Tom Mix brought his wonder horse to Kanab for the filming of Deadwood Coach. By 1930, three more movies had been made nearby. Kanab soon earned the nickname Little Hollywood. The first outdoor talkie, In Old Oklahoma, was filmed here. The list of mo vie stars who worked around Kanab includes John Wayne, Charlton Heston, Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner, and Barbara Stanwyck, naming only a few. Prehistoric peoples, Mormon prophets, pioneers, polygamists, peacemakers, scam promoters, and movie producers all played their parts in the story of Kanab. Many of them still do.
