Show THE ASYLUM some and unjust comment ia baini made concerning the means that has been expended on the territorial iti ane it has been clial the building in its present condition has cost in round numbers one hundred and fifty thousand dollars ami yet it cannot accommodate more than seventy five patients people arc too aal to jump at a conclusion out giving the subject fair and impartial consideration the asylum was never intended to be a jail no insane asylum ever should be its object is to cure if possible those who are unfortunate in being mentally deranged it is possible that by making their surroundings roun dings attractive and comfortable they might be blessed with the restoration of their reason this is the object of the asylum and should be kept in view As it is some have been disposed to overlook sach an important fact and figure it out on a tenement building basis that a good room can be built for so much and eliat BO much money to build so many of such rooms lucli a theory ought never to be given room in erecting a structure ag that under consideration the asylum was constructed under the most improved plans and all the new and most modern practicable improvements have been embodied in it other asylums were visited for this purpose and as a result we have a building that when completed will be one of the finest and most economically constructed in the west it was the purpose and has ever since been the purpose to erect it as cheap us possible compatible with the object of the institution we are well aware that build ings could be erected to accommodate seventy five or one hundred persons for a tithe of what the asylum has already cost but that Is not the point As we stated in the farat place an asylum is not a jail and should neither be made or viewed is such the asylum as it now stands is inadequate to the requirements of such an institution to meet the present demands the central building and north wing should be built an appropriation cf is asked for by the board of directors for the purpose and should be made then the male and female patients can be separated the several types of mania be classified the adain admin have adequate quarters ala every other accommodation at first proposed be had so lar as the directors are concerned we can truthfully say that from the commencement men cement they have exercised tho best judgment and used the utmost economy inthe construction and conduct of this laudable and much needed institution they have spared no efforts to accomplish the object sought and we trust the legislature vill acquiesce in and see the great necessity of making the appropriation as asked for by the directors |
