political nl Dt Should Freight Rates Be Reduced at atthe atthe the Expense of Good Service PACIFIC J s V-EV V J Editorial in Chicago Tribune August 25 1923 entitled Freight Rates and Commodity Prices The head bead of o the Institute at told a gathering of farmers that It If i the manufacturers of machinery clothing house furnishings and other commodities would reduce prices 2 per cent this would reduce the farmers fanner's expenses as much a as a 25 23 per cent reduction In freight rates So would a reduction of 1 per cent In Interest on loans Tho The trouble with that proposition is la that the lIe freight rates may bo be reduced possibly reduced bY possibly political pressure commodities and Interest not so readily But Dut that Is a consideration the farmers tanners will ponder ery care ull If It they look to the tho future They may be able to force a rC reduction in freight rates by b using their Influence upon immediate the machinery of regulation but If It that reduces the efficiency of transportation the imme imme- diate advantage will be sv swallowed allowed up sooner or later probably sooner Regulation unless It ft Is constructive unless In the long run It builds up
