I dont think the hill and I are adversaries but who ever has toiled here has had a hard time. Up to now it has resisted beautification, seeming to opt for the more rustic look of the past. But one day I think that it will respond to a more formal setting. Goble said that the greater the challenge, the greater the reward in terms of personal gratification. What you see here now is the old monuments, wild flowers, lilacs and pioneer yellow roses emblematic of the people whose lives were lived here and who ended their lives here. I write a lot of poetry, he said, and I get inspiration from what I see here. You can write, you can paint, or do whatever you do in the creative process better up here because it opens up new vistas in such a serene atmosphere. According to Goble, there is a very strong continuity in this community with a strong thread that ties us to the past and those who have gone before. The reasons for doing something like this are not necessarily rational, he said. They transcend reason. When alls said and done, I challenge anyone to find a more beautiful place when it is finished. It will be a blend of the indigenous and natural with accents from the present. You have to be as stubborn and tenacious as the old hill to bring this about. All Gobles help is on a voluntary basis. He relies heavily on people he has contact with, such as scout troops and private individuals who want to be part of the restoration. He said there have been 400 service hours (donated time) so far this spring and he has any number of Eagle projects that troops can become involved in. The thing that is really important is cooperation by the respective families who have a commitment to family unity and respect for their dead here. There are about 1,000 graves here and obviously there are still family members who should be concerned about their graves. But there are also people buried here without progeny who could be adopted as a family plot, he added. But he further noted that it would be necessary to be careful and keep the efforts coordinated and communicated, so that they dont disturb something that someone has purposely planted. But I would encourage people who dont have any kin in the cemetery to adopt a family plot, in adopting a family plot, there could be a lot of satisfaction, Goble said I dont think anyone should be to fill the tanks from the canal. As far as Im concerned, the water system is ready to go, Goble New graves are somewhat said limited due to the fact that cemetery records are not as clear as they ought to be. I plan on doing a survey to determine where the unmarked graves are. However along the periphery of the graveyard there are a limited number of plots available. Goble is also asking cemetery plot owners to contact him by telephone or letter to help clarify the plots where their dead are buried. Donations would also be welcome for ongoing landscaping and the cost of a survey, as well as the water system and paving of the road. Id like to have corner markers to define the perimeter of the cemetery lots, he said. We also neeo dump trucks to haul top soil for some of the landscaping. He added that top soil could be provided for families at $25 a load. Plans call for grass being planted on the southeast corner of the cemetery that will extend right up to the wild flowers, with the idea of making a small rest area. In addition to being a husband and a father, Goble is also bishop of Lake Ridge 3rd ward and has been a member of the Salt Lake City Chaplains Corps the past six years. PRESENT A VERY SPECIAL AND BARBERSHOP CONCERT ,17 on forgotten, Memorial Day, I see some of the and sometimes FEATURING graves without flowers standing alone and forgotten. Coming to the cemetery every day or so has been a great reward to my family. They get a better perspective of life and death because they learn to revere the dead as well as the living, he added. Goble noted that lately the tide has seemed to turn and he feels that most of the people coming through the cemetery now have a sense of commitment to their ancestors. He further said that he has a long term lease on the hill and long term objective to beautify both the hill and the cemetery. The old hill is a natural habitat for wild life. There are birds and squirrels and a pair of golden eagles that hunt together on warm sunny days. So far, however, it has been impossible to get water to the facility. The closest that any program ever came was during the Depression when two cement reservoirs were to be connected with pipe coming from the Salt Lake and Utah Canal. However it was rumored that two men stole the pipe to build fences and the project was abandoned. Now, however, Goble has approval from Kennecott for tanks and pumps to bring water from the canal to the facility. The pump station will be coming right out of the Bonneville gate, up the side of the fence on the north side of the cemetery. One tank will be on the top of the hill and the other on the southeast corner near the cemetery gate.
