Show - THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday June 3, 1987 - rV- - Page 18 Telephone service at Natural Bridges Throughout its 79 year history, Natural Bridges National Monument has been a remote and isolated unit of the National Park System. Asphalt roads came to the area as late as 1976. In 1979, the area received national attention when, at the time, the worlds largest photovoltaic power plant began producing electrical power for the monuments needs. Now, the last major hurdle to connect Natural Bridges to the real world has been overcome with the installation of a telephone. Area Manager Gary Hasty says that the best thing about having a telephone will be ment and the telephone repeater sites provided by Natural Bridges may have been one of the last government offices to receive telephone service, but yet one of the few to have a complete solar photo-voltaic- doing routine office business by phone instead of making a two hour drive for a 10 minute telephone call. It has also been very difficult for all of us living out here. We have not had contact with friends and families, like most other people do. The telephone will be a great morale booster, he says. The monument had been connected to a radio network shared between Canyonlands and Arches National Parks. The installation of the micro-wav- e telephone requires a be sent via two isolated signal repeater sites to Moab. With all electrical power to the monu power system. In January, a crew from De Laurentiis Entertainment Group of Hollywood finished three months shooting the new film comedy, Million Dollar Mystery, scheduled to premiere nationally June 12. Movie-goer-s familiar with the Lake Powell area may pick up on clues in the movie, piece them together, determine the location where the cash is stashed and win $1 million in the national movie theatre ballot promotion. Not even Director Richard Fleischer knows the answer, but he does know that the big clue involves the word bridge. It could be the card game, a span across water, a dental bridge, an eyeglasses bridge, a musical bridge, a pool table bridge or whatever, he told United Press International. Is it Rainbow Bridge? Only De Laurentiis promotion de 150-ma- n partment knows.
