Show May 28 1975 Page 2 Cafeteria High Rise not making profits Dave Kingham give Indepth reporter Denying charges by dorm representatives Wayne Smith director of auxiliary services said the High Rise Cafeteria is not making excess profits Smith also denied charges that the recently established no limit food policy was implemented to compensate for these profits The amount students pay for room and board is geared to meet Smith bond issue obligations said The goal of the services is to the students the best possible food and housing for the least money he said “As in any nonprofit operation it is not easy to hit exactly on the line of meeting your obligations and nothing more or less” Smith said “Last year because of rising prices and fixed contracts we were in the red this year we are a little over the line” Any money that comes in over the immediate bond obligations is used to replace or purchase necessary equipment or make improvements Smith said The inonly time a profit is made tentionally is during the summer months when organizations such as Boys State and Tupperware use the facilities he said The profits gained from these organizations are not big Smith said but they help fill the gaps in the budget The reason for the good year the High Rise Cafeteria is having is a good summer session and efficient food buying he said “A good example of the efficiency of our head buyer Carol Spackman is that while sugar prices went up to $6115 through analyzing price trends we were able to buy all our sugar when it was still $1292 for 100 pounds” Smith said The reason the no limit policy on food in the cafeteria was implemented is to give the students what they want and make the most enjoyable room and board situation possible Smith said “We actually think it will cut down on food waste because students will no longer tqke food they may not want just in case they find they are still hungry but can’t go back for more" Smith said The High Rise cafeteria tries to operate as a non-prof- it food policy to avoid business and recently initiated a no-lim- it profits Photo by Ken Sink Although the present board costs are calculated so closely that even missed meals are accounted for in the price Smith said a meal ticket plan is also minority and the problem can be solved “We are very pleased with the A problem has been encountered with students carrying program so far” Smith said out food and feeding all their “And we are planning to continue friends Smith said but it’s a it next year” under consideration Harmer cops top honor Journalism students honored George Rhoades for Student Life A Pennsylvania senior was named winner of the Carlton Culmsee Outstanding Journalism Senior Award at the USU Society of Professional Journalists Sigma Delta Chi Honors Banquet Thursday night Carol Harmer Mars Pa received the award which is named in honor of Dr Carlton Culmsee former dean of College of Humanities and Arts and professor emeritus Culmsee was instrumental in promoting the journalism program at USU since 1945 Ms Harmer is employed Parttime as a reporter for the Logan Hearld Journal and has worked as a Student Life staff member The award was established by the Communication Department around in the region The region Utah includes Wyoming Colorado and New Mexico The Mark of Excellence contest was judged by professionals in the four states honor the outstanding in journalism senior graduating for achievement Lea Cottam a junior from Salt Lake City received a $100 to scholarship from the Utah Richard Headliners as the outstanding junior or senior in journalism The Utah Headliners is the Society professional chapter in Salt Lake City Larry Kurtz past Headliners president and Utah-Idah- o for the manager Associated Press presented the award Mike Donahue Logan was named the outstanding senior member of the campus chapter He is also employed parttime as a reporter at the Logan Herald Journal J Chris Larson editor of Aggie Review received the Society’s Mark of Excellence Award for Region 9 which went to the USU magazine as the second best all- -
