Show T THAT HAT was a very pleasing lecture delivered in the Art Room recently by his honor Judge Smith The speaker was very enthusiastic over the legal profession and has a way of impressing his views upon his audience even though those views calmly studied might appear just a little absurd For example the conclusion that must follow from the statements that lawyers are always conservative always opposing innovation inno and hence do not make good statesmen and the one which came a little farther along in the honorable gentleman's remarks that the laws are not only administered by lawyers but made by lawyers is a little startling We naturally ask where does the statesman statesman statesman states states- man come in at all Indeed we might ask where does anyone or anything else than lawyers come in at all Many people hold fondly to the belief that the theman man man- many and complex phases which belong to our modern civilization are all necessary necessary necessary sary to its existence and conditions of its perpetuity many believe that philosophers philosophers philosophers philo philo- scientists inventors tors statesmen educators all have a place of im importance in our modern so society society society so- so and that the labors of each conduce to the general welfare But this is only another instance of the fallacy of popular popular popular lar belief According to the learned lecturer lawyers e beneficent laws and nd lawyers alone protect our liberties lawyers alone stand as a 0 mighty bulwark between society and anarchy and though no lawyer ever became as great a statesman as Jefferson Jeffer Jeffer- efferson effer- effer son lawyers have almost unaided extorted extorted extorted ex ex- from the ignorance and brutality of the past the manifold liberties we now enjoy 0 O mighty and benefic beneficent nt lawyers lawyers' l I in behalf of misguided and benighted benighted benighted be be- society we beg pardon for the many aspersions that have have been cast upon you you- and henceforth our prayer will be thank heaven for your august and serene protection against all the evils which beset us |
