Show Editorial . . . There have been several ideas born for the name of the new park to be developed on the old prison site. Each is not without its merit. "Sugar Mill Park" was suggested sug-gested by the committee appointed to explore the possibilities of the new area and chart plans for its development and management. This was a meritorious thought because the Sugar Mill first erected in the vicinity, though a failure, sparked the begirnings of a great industry in the inter-mountain inter-mountain west. In addition, the whole area now bears the name "Sugar" though the MILL has been changed to HOUSE SUGAR HOUSE. For this reason there are some power- ful interests pulling for the name Sugar House Park. There is merit in their thinking, too. It will, as they say, certainly mark the park for all time as being an integral part of the area where most of the support for the care of the park will come. Both the past and the present find proper recognition in the name. An outline of legislation con-crning con-crning this area is set forth in a letter to the "Public Forum" of a local paper of last Sunday. It was written by former Senator Lorenzo E. Elgren. He points out that the legislation looked upon their activity as establishnig Utah's first "state park." So he suggests that the name for the developed old prison site should be "The State Park." Still others, not satisfied with a meager three suggestions Sugar Mill Park, Sugar House Park The State Park have encouraged a contest in which a prize will be given for the most appropriate name suggested. Strong opposition has developed against this last idea and Sugar House groups whose opinions should merit serious consideration categorically state they will not be bound to accept a name chosen through such a procedure. With everybody in on the act, as it should be in the processes of democratic decision, compromise, comprom-ise, one cannot tell for sure just what name the new park will carry. It would seem to us that the logical name would be "SUGAR HOUSE PARK." |
