Show SCHOOL BELLS RING in SUGAR HOUSE When the city schools convene next Thursday, there will be an estimated 38,000' pupils, an increase in-crease of approximately 2250 over last year's enrollment. According to Arthur Arnesen, director of research for the public schools, about half of this number will be an increase in kindergarten . pupils. Registration for Granite district will be Wednesday, September 3, while city children will have one more day of vacation, making the mass return to the classroom on September 4, with the exception of pupils for the new Hillside junior high, who will register on Monday, September 8. Kindergarten children in the city should have haij a physical examination exam-ination at one of the school clinics during the summer. All pupils who are transferring to city schools from another district, dis-trict, must report to the board of education, 440 East 1st South, to receive a registration certificate. Big news in the Sugar House area is the opening of the new Hillside junior high school, 2375 Garfield avenue. Although the cafeteria, gymnasium, gymna-sium, industrial arts and health education rooms will not be ready for use for some time, there are ' Continued on Page 9 SCHOOL BELLS RING IN SUGAR HOUSE Continued irom Page 1 24 classrooms and the library to handle the influx of some 710 pupils of the 7th, 8th and 9th grades, and two classes of sixth grade pupils. In an elaborate rotation schedule, sched-ule, Frank S. Allen will move from East high to take over the duties of principal of the new junior high school; Dr. W. Fred Arbogast will move to East from Irving Junior; Mark Lloyd will transfer from Garfield elementary school to Irving, and Emil Nyman will become principal of Garfield. Total number of new classroom teachers and librarians for the Salt Lake schools is 62, of which 24 teachers and one librarian will instruct at Hillside. There will also be a student counselor and a school secretary at the new building. Pupils living in the eastern section sec-tion of Highland Park district will continue to be transported to schools closer to town until next fall, when the new Grandview school will be in operation. This building is going up on Connor street south of 27th South. The Nibley Park school, being erected on 8th East south of 27th South will also be ready for occupancy oc-cupancy next fall, thus easing the crowded facilities even more. The new high school planned for the old prision site is still in the paper stage. Blueprints will not be ready for construction until next year, and actual building will have to wait for funds. - The school board still has not decided upon an official name for this high school, but for want of a better name, are referring to it as the South East high school, while businessmen and citizens are adamant that it be called Sugar House high school. Boundaries for the new Hillside Junior high school are as follows: Beginning at Sunnyside avenue and the city limits; west to 19th East, south t oEmigration Canyon Creek, southwest to 17th East, south on 17th East to Parley's Canyon Creek, east to the city limits, and north along the city limits to the point of beginning. All sixth grade pupils in the Dilworth district who live east of 23rd East and all sixth grade pupils in the Garfield district who live east of 17th East will attend the Hillside Junior high school to prevent overcrowding over-crowding in those elementary school buildings. |
