After 21 years of leading students along the trails of North Fork Park, Dave Jenkins, teacher/ facilitator of Swanson’s North Fork Environmental Center, is retiring July 1. A huge proponent of outdoor education, Dave introduced tens of thousands of students to crosscountry skiing and snowshoeing. Because his two great loves are kids and skiing, he meticulously groomed ski trails for students so they could have the best day ever. He introduced them to insects, plants, and animals—large and small—and encouraged curiosity, observation, and the discovery of new ways of seeing things. He trimmed hiking trails and set up archery and hatchet throwing courses and put in disc golf and geocaching courses. When COVID-19 hit, he took his show on the road, traveling to schools and setting up archery, tomahawk tossing, and an exercise in teamwork called “team ski.” Prior to the Environmental Center, Dave taught high school science in the Jordan district. He then came to Snowcrest Jr. High where he coached track and NAL, taught science, and engaged students in observing the world around them. He challenged them every Friday with “Stump the Te a c h e r, ” where he would sit on a tree stump on his desk and field questions. Any student with a science q u e s tion Dave couldn’t answer, but the student could, earned a prize. Dave says he’s ready now Dave Jenkins as “Stump the for some adventures Teacher.” of his own and the spontaneity of being the master of his own calendar.
