Show Death of Lieutenant Seamauds At 920 last night the fell sergeant appeared I ap-peared at the bedside of Lieutenant W G Seamands and mustered him into that endless army which is ever marching march-ing toward but never reaching the limitless limit-less bounds of eternity He died surrounded sur-rounded by loving friends among whom were a number of G A R Comrades of which organization deceased was an i honored member and his assoniafps in I which have during his long and tedious prostration been unremitting in their efforts to smooth his journey down into the Dark Valley through which his line pf 1 march was ordered Lieutenant Seamands was a comnissioned officer in General P E Connors command and served during the entire war in this Territory and Ne vada He was a good officer and a brave soldier trusted by his superiors in rank respected by his equals and beloved by his subordinates He was ever faithful to his duty and distinguished himself whenever an opportunity presented in the somewhat limited field of his military services during the great struggle which terminated in the reunion of the Ameri can States and the downfall of an institution which has left Hf a single survivor to blot the fair escutcheon of American liberty and progress At the conclusion of the war he was stationed at Camp Halleck in Elko county Nevada and returning to civil life was elected Assessor of that county at the first election held there serving the people in that capacity as faithfully and honorably as he had as a I commissioned officer in the army Since that time he has been mostly engaged in mining always leading the van in search ing for new fields for development and was one of the pioneers of the Wood River country wher he at the time of his death owned a number of valuable properties Nearly a year ago he was stricken with an incurable dis ease and some four months since came to Salt Lake City where he remained until summoned to his eternal home A short time ago he married the lady to I whom he had been entraper fnr mo years and whose loving 00 hand smoothed m iljr his pillow nursed him until the endand closed his eyes in death Deceased was about 45 years of age was born we believe in Iowa at least most of his relatives reside in that State He has a sister Mrs E E Phillips of Eureka Nevada who is at present visiting in Shenandoah Iowa The funeral will take place tomorrow under the auspices of McKean Post G A R notice of which will be found in another column |
