Others, perhapslimited bytime, budget or travel experience, like to stay close to home, photographing wildlife in U.S. national parks. No matter where you travel, these “how-to” phototips will help you capture animals, with a conventionalor digital camera. Practice Makes Perfect. Before you depart for your destination, spend sometimeata nearby wildlife park or zoo and practice standard photographic techniques: composingcarefully, fine-tuning your exposures, working with fill-flash andso on. Takenotes, evaluate your results and think about how you can improve yourpictures. @ Be Patient. Timeis oneof the main ingredients in successful wildlife photography. Whenyou arein the field, expect to spend some time waiting for that magic » wildlife encounter. A goodguide, in many cases, can dramatically reduce this waiting time. @ The Eyes HaveIt. Simply put, if you don’t havethe animal's eyes in sharp focus, you missed the shot. So focus very, verycarefully. @ Pack a Telephoto Lens. If you don’t want to frighten an animal, youwill need a telephoto lens, perhaps a 70-200 mm or a 100-400 mm zoom. For distant animals, you may need a 500 mm or 600 mmlens. @M Look for Action. Award-winning wildlife photographs usually show the animal involved in someactivity: running, flying, eating and so on. It's OK to take a posed shot, but look and wait for action if you wanta dramatic photograph @Use a Fast Film. To photograph fast-paced action with a telephoto lens, fast film is usually required, especially in the late afternoon and early morning when most of wildlife action takes place. New ISO 400 and 800 color-printfilms and ISO 200 and 400 slide films are good choices for “freezing” action with fast shutter speeds (1/500 of a second and higher). For pictures that show movement — thatis, a slightly blurred subject or background — slowerfilms (ISO 50 to 100) and slowershutter speeds(4 to 1/60 of a sec- | ond) are recommended. @ Watch the Background. Thebackground can make or break a picture. Carefully compose your picture so a branch is not sticking out of your subject's head. Also makesure that no area , aroundyour subjectis brighter than your subject, because when you look at a picture your eye always goesto the brightest part of the scenefirst. @ Honesty Is the Best Policy. Many locations around the world offerrealistic wildlife settings, which can makean animal photographed in captivity look as though it was photographed in the wild. It's fun and easy to shoot in these conditions. I've doneit myself. If you get a great wildlife picture in one of these locations, be honest and say it the animal was photographed in captivity. This “honesty is the best policy” point, by the way, is of utmost concern to the North American Nature Photographers Association (NANPA).
