S6.-A bloody auel was fought at Bargard's ranch n the Bluff mountains, about thuty mile north of here, in which E. Graves, a prominent stockman of this county was shot and instantly killed by Del Weant, another very prominent stock-roan stock-roan of the county. The particulars, as learned from eye-witnesses, ar as follows: Graves and a couple of friends went to Bargards ranch on Wednesday. About 1 o'clock they stopped and had dinner with Weant and a party of hunters who were stopping there with him It seems there have been hard feelings between Graves and Weant for some time over a mortgage the former had on some property belonging; to Weant. After dinner Graves wen t out, mounted mount-ed his horse, and was about to ride away, when something was said by Weant about the mortgage. Only a few words v ere spoken, when Graves dismounted and the men engaged in a fist fight, but were soon parted by their friends. After being parted, Weant picked up a branding iron that was close at hand and held it by his side. No sooner had he done this than Graves drew a six-shooter, six-shooter, whereupon Weant put down the branding iron and went into his cabin and seized his Winchester, but was prevented from going out by Mr. Betts, one of the party of hunters. Graves followed up to the cabin door, six-shooter in hand, and called to Weant to come out. Weant grabbed the gun away from Betts and started out. Seeing him coming with a Winchester, Win-chester, Graves ran back to his horse and hastily unstrapped his Winchester, turned around, and was just in the act of raising his gun, when Weant took deliberate aim and fired, The ball struck Graves in the center of the neck, severing the spinal cord, causing instant death. Weant then mounted his horse and came to Thompson's and gave himself up. The body was brought in by some of the men from the ranch. The cor-over cor-over was called from Moab and held an inquest. Weant was placed under 65,000 bonds and will have a preliminary prelimi-nary hearing at Moab September 1. I. C. Weant, a prominent business man of Salt Lake has arrived here, also another brother, R. E. Weant of Car-bondale, Car-bondale, Colo. John Graves, a business busi-ness man of Denver, brother of the deceased de-ceased was telegraphed for in the morning. morn-ing. The body was preparedfor burial here and was sent to Graves' home at American Fork. Graves was maried to a prominent young lady of American Ameri-can Fork about two weeks ago. Public Pub-lic feeling seems to be in favor of Weant. However, the affair is deeply regretted, as both are very prominent men in this county. Two of the Weant brothers have been in the cattle business in the Bluff mountain country for some time, but recently sold out, intending to leave on account of the rough characters which infest the region. |
