Toward that end, we are publishing brief overviews of each school, beginning this week with Parley's Park Elementary School. At Parley's Park Elementary School, students are going to learn the state mandated core curriculum; cur-riculum; the core is a basic outline of the traditional three r's: reading, writing, and arithmetic. However, that is the goal of every school in the state of Utah. Parley's Park goes much further. A student who graduates from Parley's has had more experience and more individual in-dividual attention than most public school students. As Superintendent Dr. Ron Mcln-tire Mcln-tire has pointed out, there are few quantitative measurements of achievement at the elementary and middle school levels, and those that exist are not necessarily accurate prognosticators of future performance. perfor-mance. Since we can't really examine the ends achieved by the school, it is more appropriate to look at the means. As home-owning Parkites are aware, taxes are higher in Park City than in other Utah towns. The reason is a five mil voted leeway; a choice made by Park City voters to accept higher taxes to go directly to education. educa-tion. The purpose of the leeway is to keep class sizes low and teacher salaries high in an effort to attract the best educators. Once a teacher has been chosen for Parley's the selection process is always long as scores of teachers look to Park City for employmentthe employ-mentthe teacher is instructed in Parley's philosophy. The basic tenant te-nant of that philosophy is spelled out in the first of five points of philosophy: "The children are the reason for our existence. All other considerations are secondary to the needs of our children. All decisions must use the good of the children as the common denominator. " One consideration which always comes second is teacher ego. Certainly, Cer-tainly, even at the elementary level, there are going to be personality conflicts between teachers and students. Some teachers simply can't get through to some kids; it's chemistry. To combat this problem, Parley's has instituted a program called the Teacher Assistance Team. Organized Organiz-ed by special education teacher Martha Crook, it seeks to help teachers with problem students through sharing of instructional techniques. The program has been immensely successful. Normally, when a student stu-dent is having problems, he is referred refer-red for testing to see if he should be placed into a special education program. pro-gram. Last year, in TAT's first season, 18 of 25 students referred to TAT were helped in their classrooms without the need of special programs. pro-grams. The way TAT works is simple. The student's problem is examined in the context of the teacher's methods, and the entire relationship is analyzed. The teachers all offer advice to help the student. If that doesn't work, a teacher might sit in on a class to observe the way the problem student is reacting to teaching stimuli. Then the TAT gets together once more to decide if the student can be helped in the classroom.
