Each high school chemistry student was required o write an essay on one of the six subjects as a part of the work for the winter quarter. Only five students were successful in having their papers sent to Salt Lake to compete, in the third national prize essay contest, for the prizes offered by the American Chemical society through the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Francis P. Garvan. The students whose papers were sent to Salt Lake and their subjects are as follows: James Linder, The Relation of Chemistry to National Defense; Grant II. Gates, The Relation of Chemistry to National Defen-Blis- s Jarvis, The Relation of Chemistry to Agriculture; Carlyle Thompson, The Relation of Chemistry to Aviation ; and Maurice J. Miles, The Relation of Chemistry to the Home. The winners in the state competition will be announced in about six weeks. Due to the fact that the English students were not required to compete this year, there were only five essays selected to be sent off as compared with sixteen last year, and for the same reason the school is not represented in all six subjects. Mary The Third by Profilers has been selected for the annual school play. It concerns three generations of girlhood; The girl of 1870, of 1897 and of 1926. It is an excellent comedy but is also an interesting study of a fundamental idea. There are unusual acting possibilities in Mary The Third. Tryouts will be held Thursday, Feb. 4, at4:20 p. m. in the College Theater. History tells us of many other men who lived and died for their country, whether they were justified in dying and if they did it for a righteous cause. American History tells us of the men who tried to do things ' and failed. It tells us also of men who tried to do other Some things and succeeded. who tried a certain thing failed, while others tried the same thing in a different way and succeeded. Thus American History teaches us the right way to go about things without blunders and always with success. American History gives us a firmer understanding of our great government. It tells us more about the different government offices. It shows us how to vote correctly and wisely. It prepares us for our later lives, for any one of us might hold some government office when we are older. When we study American History we can readily appreciate the trials of men and women who strived and suffered for us and our country. It is easier to remember them and honor them when we study history. When we do not study history we soon forget how humanity has saved us and forget that if it had not been for their struggles, the great United States could not be A Union Forever. History tells us who the most popular men and women of our country were and of their struggles to sustain what they thought was right. This course will study the soils of southern Utah from the standpoint of bacterial fertility and general composition. Appropriations have been made for the purchase of new equipment in both departments that will be required by this course. There has also been arrang-ment- s for a new case to keep the collection of reptiles in. The archeological collection will be placed in a new case that the Sophomore class will present to the school. LADIES REST ROOM Enough has been said about a ladies rest room and it is now time for action. Just talking about a thing will never get us anywhere, the thing to do is to act, and act quickly, while the officers are in the righ mood and are willing to appropriate the needed funds. Of course much money will be necessary to ininstall this project in the school but it will many times repay us for the money and work put into it.
