It took children and youth with their cartons and armbands, walking about town in stormy weather. But, most of all, it took the generous donations of residents of Brigham City to make last weekends UNICEF drive successful. Residents of this area donated $410 in the annual rounds, it was announced by Church Women United President Dee Dolan, with that group coordinating the local UNICEF drive. Elementary school children went out on Saturday morning amid a rainstorm and returned for refreshments at St. Michaels Episcopal church; junior high youth went Saturday night and then visited a spook alley and returned to the First Baptist church; senior high youth went Sunday evenat the Presing and byterian fellowship hall. UNICEF donation cartons will remain in local businesses'' until the end of the week, and there will also be UNICEF greeting cards on order at church functions and at World Community Day services on Brigham City Fire Chief Rod Romer has special reasons to urge smokers to sign pledge cards for the Great American the day off from Smokeout, smoking proposed by the American Cancer society. Every year an average 1,800 Americans die in fires caused by smoking and burn up $95 million in property. I think the idea behind the promotion is a sound one, Romer commented. A day off from cigarettes gives the smoker a sense of control. Even if he returns to smoking the following day, hes ahead by the knowledge that he can control the habit. And maybe, Romer added, Nov. 17 will be one day without a single fire caused by smoking. That alone would make the Great American Smokeout a success. The cancer society stresses that sending in pledge cards is an important psychological step for the smoker. Pledge cards are available at the fire station. Cancer society spokesman Glenn Nelson explained that the concentrated effort to focus attention-oof this single-aspec- t cancer control offers an opportunity to affect the habits of the community. As a Brigham City homemaker for the past 19 years, Beth and her husband Joe raised their four children here and participated in the usual Little League, Scouting and school activities. Beth served as president ot Bunderson PTA in 1963-64- . During these years, she has also participated in volunteer activities including the League of Women Voters, numerous fund drives, Church Women United, and church school superin tendent, and in many other capacities. Her studies with the League of Women Voters have made Beth familiar with city finance, tax structure, planning and zoning, library policies, and law enforcement. Beth served on the city Planning and Zoning Commission in 1972-76- . Those who have served on committees with Beth know that she "does her homework" well and is always prepared and informed. Has your monthly retirement check ever been late? This was why her friends urged her to run for City Council. Since announcing her candidacy, she has talked with each city department head about their plans and problems. Thats the kind of thorough person Beth is. She is also dedicated to the principles of Americanism. It is primarily through her efforts that Brigham City has held patriotic programs on July 4th, that the inspirational religious service was held on Bicentennial Sunday, and that the project to obtain 50 state flags as a lasting momento of the year was accomplished. Beth has a special interest in keeping Brigham City a community while maintaining a healthy which she views as economy and sound tax base. This is the basis for her idea of "controlled city growth" assuring that new development be orderly and meet standards, that utilities and services keep pace, and that new business and industry be of a clean and quiet nature befitting a family community. She also views continued quality of law enforcement and recreation programs ana our improving library services as important factors in protecting the quality of life in Brigham City.
