Children's Justice Center looking for child advocates Each member of the community com-munity can influence the life, of .a child by giving two hours each week through the Children's Justice Center advocacy program. Volunteers advocate for children who have been severely physically abused or sexually abused who are currently receiving services from the Children's Justice Center. Advocates build the self-esteem of children by showing them someone cares and by visiting them within their homes. Friendship is fostered through a variety of activities; activi-ties; some ideas include going to the library or movies, going on walks, building snowmen, hiking or just talking. The; Children's ; Justice Center is an environment where child victims of abuse are assessed and receive counseling and support services. The staff, therapists, thera-pists, nurses and the environment envi-ronment can help children feel comfortable so they may begin to deal with the difficult and often frightening frighten-ing issues that surround ! I ZZ ' " r . 770 North State Lindon abuse. Individuals who would like to dedicate their time as advocates must make a two-hour a week, six-month minimum commitment. Volunteers are trained during dur-ing a 30-hour orientation. The next training session begins Saturday, Jan. 25. Additional volunteer opportunities are available throughout Utah County. Some of these are listed below. Volunteers at the Eastlake Care Center can spend one-on-one time with elderly residents. Various opportunities are available, such as performing, painting paint-ing fingernails, making gingerbread gin-gerbread men or visiting while drinking hot chocolate choco-late with them. Entertainment is always welcome. Eastlake Care Center has really appreciated appreciat-ed dance studios who have come in and performed. All members of our community are invited to share themselves them-selves for a couple of hours each week. Volunteers have this opportunity to come in and make residents' time it Vhere the Good Stuff is. 1360 more enjoyable and happier. Those interested can serve as a role model for youth by teaching life skills at the Division of Youth Corrections. Volunteers can teach residents how to live on their own, apply for jobs and fill out resumes. Classes can also be taught for Yoga, cake decorating, foreign language skills and building model airplanes. Professionals in the community commu-nity are encouraged to come share different trades and hobbies to expose the youth to a variety of ideas, such as knitting and crocheting to make beanie hats. Also, individuals with experience are invited to teach ceramics ceram-ics to the youth. Volunteers can also help tutor students with their homework. . Other volunteer opportunities opportu-nities include collecting and donating items to their facility. Currently, Youth Corrections is looking for fish tanks to use for therapeutic thera-peutic treatments, as well as birthday cakes they can freeze until the next birthday.
