Times Correspondent Utah County residents may disagree about many issues, but most of them are in agreement about one thing: They like to own and drive cars. That fact is evident evi-dent from seeing the increasing numbers of automobiles auto-mobiles on Utah County streets, as well as the numerous automobile dealerships deal-erships in the county, displaying dis-playing thousands of new and used cars, every day of the year. Many new homes in Utah County are now being built to house two, three and even four vehicles, attesting to the fact that some families fami-lies own that many cars. A century ago, when horses and buggies served as the primary transportation transporta-tion for local residents, there was already a pent-up demand for the new horseless horse-less carriages, called automobiles. auto-mobiles. Seen by some as an impractical oddity, and others, oth-ers, as the conveyance of the future, automobiles came to a Utah County that was not prepared for the advent of the new vehicles that startled star-tled horses and pedestrians, alike. One young man, who lived near Utah Lake, by the name of Thomas Joel Bunnell, had just received a family inheritance of money, instead of property. With that money, he bought a very fashionable car: the first car in Vineyard a convertible. He must have turned quite a few heads, as he drove his bright, shining horseless carriage down the country lanes. Over the years, many auto dealerships and used car lots sprang up in Utah County, offering large selections selec-tions of new and used vehicles. vehi-cles. In 1945 Virgil Smith opened Orem's first used car lot, calling it Orem Auto Sales. Later, Lynn Bullock bought that business and replaced it with a Hudson Motor Car dealership. In 1950 A.V. Washburn added a new KaiserFraser Dealership to his Washburn Service garage at 787 North State Street in Orem. When Washburn retired, his son, Alvin Washburn, moved the business to 1645 South State Street and added two Japanese Auto dealerships. Over the years, the eight children and many grandchildren grand-children of Thomas Joel Bunnell, have purchased many cars from County auto dealers, A that first one he b nearly a century ago. month, April Week: granddaughter of Bunnell, bought a .
