With the help of sloppy play early on by the Bruins, the Tigers broke out early to an 8-0 lead. They hit three of their first four shots, including three-pointers by Tiffany Peterson and Aubrey Stay. The Bruins, however, could not get their offense on track. They missed their first five attempts from the field and committed six turnovers in the first quarter. quar-ter. "We came out too excited," excit-ed," Mountain View coach Dave Houle said of his team's slow start. "We also had to change our lineup a bit because Heather Hansen hasn't practiced in eight days." Hansen hurt her knee but was able to contribute 14 points coming off the bench. The team's lineup changed even more when junior, forward Ashley Henry sprained her ankle again with 1:43 remaining in the opening quarter. She did not return to the game. Orem was up 15-11 after the first period and trailed by only two at the half. "They came out and played great. This is the way you want a rivalry game to go," Houle said. "We just had to weather then-runs." then-runs." The Bruins started to climb back into the game behind Mallory Gillespie. The junior scored her team's first eight points of the game as she kept Mountain View from falling too far behind. j mmm'mmmmt I. nrnr fifths I ,11 X -, p.; ' 1 ' :1 - Prep Notes Ritn. Photo by Martin Harris Heather Keith finds her spot on the floor for three points. She led the Tigers with 16 points against Mountain View. "There is just something about playing on this side of the street for Mallory," Houle said. Last year playing at Orem, Gillespie broke the state record when she went off for 10 three-pointers. This year, she made only four but the pair she hit in the first quarter were huge. The wheels started to fall off for the Tigers as they started to turn the ball over. During the first four minutes, min-utes, Orem committed just one turnover. The team managed to commit four more in the part of the first "quarter and had five more in the second. Things did not get better after half-time. half-time. Orem gave the ball away 12 times in the second half. Heather Keith continues to step to the fore front of the Orem offense. She scored 16 points, going five-for-seven from the field, including two-of-two from beyond the arc. She also drained all four of her free throws. Orem drops to 12-3, 3-1 while the Bruins improve to 12-2, 3-0. The rematch is at Mountain View on February 12. Box Score Mtn. View 56, Orem 43 Mtn. View Ho. Cheesman (MV) 11.1 MARTIN HARRIS Times Sports Editor Mountain View girl's basketball bas-ketball might have an incredible record during the past decade but no one, including the Bruins are untouchable. As I watched the warm-ups warm-ups of last Thursday's game between the Bruins and their Orem High rivals, I speculated with a another reporter that the game would be close, maybe 10 points at the half, before the Bruins really pulled away in the second half. Orem did me one better. They held a lead in the first quarter and only trailed by two at intermission. Showing that Mountain View is mortal after all. The mortality showed when Ashley Henry went down with an ankle sprain and Heather Hansen is playing with an injured knee. An injury here or there could definitely put a curve in the Bruins clear path to the state title. As I've watched the Bruins the last two seasons, it seems this is a team that thrives on their defense causing turnovers. If you want to beat them, don't commit 20 or more of them a game. In the four games I have seen with Mountain View, their opponents oppo-nents have committed 17 turnovers (Timpview), 22 for Orem, 28 for Pleasant Grove and 36 for Springville. The Bruins have a guard line of three all-staters in the Hansen's and Mallory Gillespie. If an opponent throws a lazy pass, it is not going to make it to the intended target. Timpview showed in last year's state title game that they can hang in there with the Bruins. If they would have hustled a little harder this year, they would not have lost by 20 points to them earlier in the season. Orem is tough but they started making some bad passes and the game slipped away. - Next, as far as accusations accusa-tions of the Bruins running up the score against American Fork, I wasn't there either (thank goodness). good-ness). So I won't throw for the stones at the Bruin; scoring 90 nor at r r 1 cavemen lur oniy scoria 14. One team might havt done too much but another did way too little. I do applaud Gillespie for her 10 three-pointer pet. formance. She scored each of those baskets in a varsift game playing a varsitj team. Next, Orem's Heather Keith continues to shine. She makes the Tiger offense multi-dimensional An average of 13.4 point; per game is impressive but considering her teammatt leads the 4A classificatio; with a 17.9 ppg, she is mal ing the most of the shot she gets. Orem is one of the best 4A and maybe the state and Keith is key to that success. Next, I was stopped a couple of weeks ago after the conclusion of thi TimpviewOrem game. A:1 upset parent accused the T- Birds of recruiting. Et! insisted the media needs' to do something about thi problem. As I told him, I have writ ten several times about tfc unlevel playing field set d m Utah by the state legisk ture and the Utah Highl School Activitiei Association not taking at hard stance against it. There is a law in plaoj that allows students to got: almost any school the. please regardless of bound aries. That law unbaland the scale of fairness in hi school athletics. I do not believe coach are recruiting but on tl same note they are nq turning away star playen who want to be in their pra grams because of wher: they live. My opinion, it's unlikel; the legislature is going t change the law, so the ball; still resting in the UHSAA: court. Logically, the only fair way to control it is to require any varsity athlete to play at the school withii the boundaries they live. lu they wish to attend classes outside their boundary school, then they can onM play junior varsity level afl that school. That is enough for this week. Prep BasEtettEbaSB SttaEDdSgngs Through Jan. 27 Boy's Region Seven Region Lone Peak 1-0 Mtn.
