Show A PUGILISTIC MISSIONARY Row He Gets In His work on Innocent In-nocent ITUchlffaiiders The Omaha Herald has a dispatch from Bayport Michigan which tell thus graphically of the workings of one of I our Saints abroad ElderJ J Cornish a Mormon of Salt Lake has been laboring labor-ing in this vicinity for several weeks seeking to proselyte and his efforts have been conducted with success J B Davis of the Methodist Church noted with alarm the inroad making upon his flock and challenged Elder Cornish to a joint debate The first of the contests took place Saturday night and was attended at-tended by a large crowd Sunday night the crowd became boisterous and the Rev Davis was driven from the church escaping by the window The Mormon chairman of the meeting slashed around wildly with a chair knocking down half a dozen Saints and Gentiles in his efforts to preserve peace The third contest took place yesterday afternoon after-noon and the church was crowded at an I early hour Davis was promptly on I hand and evinced a desire to carry on the debate according to parliamentary rules but Cornish opened with a volume of personal abuse of his opponent amidst the remonstrances of the men and women present His language became so burtal and threatening that fearing a a fight a panic seized the people and their was a rush for the door Several I ladies were knocked down and trampled upon Davis rallied his forces outside the building and they sang Well stand the storm it cant be very long but the cohorts of righteousness were frightened fright-ened and soon dispersed The same day Elder Cornish baptized twentythree converts con-verts The village is in a state of constant con-stant dread fearing that bloodshed will yet result |
