The incredible hulks from PCHS proved Monday that they can pump iron with anybody, deposing the North Summit Braves as the 1A powerlifting champions of Utah and shattering several state records along the way. When the team points were totalled at the end of the meet, Park City was on top with 47, followed by North Summit (38), Beaver (11), North Sevier (6), and East Carbon (6). Top honors in the 2A competition went to Union, with Wasatch second and Delta third. The joint 1A-2A meet was held in the Park City High School multipurpose multi-purpose room. Not on Deer Creek You may find this hard to believe, but there were sailboat races on Deer Creek Reservoir last weekend. On Saturday morning, while plows were clearing as much as a foot of snow off the street of Park City, about i 40 diehard Hobie Cat sailors were setting up shop on the shores of Deer Creek Reservoir. Reser-voir. "It was quite cold, but really not as bad as you'd think," said Marilyn Shearer, Shear-er, one of the competitors. STATE FARM FIRE AND CASUALTY COMPANY Home Office: Bloomington, Illinois Ttl KIM and Doug Vincent, who finished first in their respective respec-tive weights. Packard, lifting lift-ing in the 135-pound class, hoisted a three-lift total of 785 pounds ( 175 in the bench, 270 in the squat and 340 in the dead lift) to defeat his North Summit opponent by 30 pounds. And Vincent, in the 145-pound class, boasted a total of 890 pounds (210 in the bench, 305 in the squat, and 375 in the dead lift) to finish 90 pounds ahead of his nearest competition. Among Park City's record-setting record-setting performances, the most spectacular came from Steve Toly and John New-land. New-land. Before Monday, the state 1A record for a squat lift in Toly's weight class (175 pounds) was 300 pounds. Toly not only beat that record, he slaughtered it, kind of gear." The event was the first Hobie "points regatta" to be held in Utah this season. "Points" races are used to help determine qualifiers for the national finals. Hobie racers originally were to have come from Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico for the race. However, How-ever, the promise of wintery weather prompted local organizers or-ganizers to call and "tell them to forget it," in Shearer's words. The warning warn-ing did not deter one out-of-state sailor, who travelled all home Max O. Vierig 1700 Park Avenue (Mt. Air Mall) 649-9161 Mon.-Fri. 9-5, Sat. 9-12 finishing with a lift of 340. And heavyweight John New-land New-land was equally impressive in the squat lift, jacking up his own state record from 385 to 420 pounds. Other state records went to Troy Packard, who beat the state record for the bench lift in his weight by 15 pounds, and to Nick Caravaglia and Greg Foote, who added five pounds onto the state record for the squat lift in 'the 155-pound class, each with a lift of 310 pounds. No trophies were awarded, since powerlifting at the 1A-2A level does not have a wide enough following to be recognized by the Utah High School Activities Association. Associa-tion. Winds were estimated esti-mated at 5 to 10 knots on Saturday and 2 to 12 knots on Sunday. Four races were held each day, two for Hobie 18s and two for Hobie 16s. In the Hobie 18 class, the boat sailed by Steve and Jay Christiansen of Salt Lake City took top honors, finishing finish-ing third, first, first and second in the four races. Dave and Rose Jensen of Summit Park were a close second with one first and three second-place finishes. Third place went to a boat piloted by Corey Sheffield. In the Hobie 16 class, first place overall went to Andy and Marilyn Shearer who took three first and one second in four races. Finishing Finish-ing second was the team of Dave Shearer and Alan Knotts, while Park City residents Harry and Sidney Reed placed third. The next Hobie points regatta for Division Five (Utah, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico) sailors will be held this weekend at Boyd Lake, near Loveland, Colorado.
