Show Support encouraged for special events center The Southern Utah State College Special Events Center campaign is now on, and we at the Record would encourage everyone in Iron County to throw their support behind such a worthy project. A special events center or a convention center has been discussed for sometime now by a number of organizations in Iron County, most recently by the Cedar City Redevelopment Advisory Committee, which could see such a center as a major impetus to development and growth in the city, as well as the county. At the same time a number of groups at the college have wanted to build such a center to improve im-prove the quality of athletic events, as well as make it possible to attract larger concerts and programs of many types to SUSC and Cedar City. Now the groups have joined together to accomplish ac-complish this goal, and they are expanding on the original committee of 250 people who have committed com-mitted themselves to the effort; and they are asking for the support of everybody. We think that support deserving. Joining the committee and adding your support is easy. Simply write to the Special Events Center Campaign, SUSC Development Office, Cedar City, Utah 84720. We urge everybody to join. Heading the committee are leaders of SUSC and Cedar City. Co-chairman Royden C. Braithwaite, former president of the college, has brought the SUSC Foundation into the effort. Co-chairman Dixie Leavitt, chairman of the Cedar City Redevelopment Advisory Committee and former state senator, has swung the support of the redevelopment agency. Thus, we and the college are not asking you to join in with something that doesn't have a broad base of support. The original committee of 250 was made up of people from all walks of life. Also, the students of SUSC are partipating through increased fees, which are earmarked for the construction of the center. SUSC itself is chipping in a large amount of money. And it is hoped that the Utah State Legislature will help. However, for the effort to be successful, the local people must show the initiative and support the building of the facility to the fullest. If the people in Iron County do not support the building, the legislature will quite probably say no as far as funding goes, and the building may never be constructed. It is a good cause. It is good for the entire county. Again, we urge your support. |
