Show -- WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, AUGUST 31, 1978' THEATER Cr gnTS Robert B Day, one of Kaysvilles outstanding artist in oils, exhibited 26 of his paintings in the Barnes Banking Company the past month for a community exhibit MR. DAY demonstrates his artistic unique ability through his paintings, many of which are in private collections throughout Utah and other states He is spending more time painting landscapes, rather than still life, but has done some attractive still life paintings in the past He finds the public trend is more toward the landscapes in oils rather than m water colors MR. DAY was born in Lay-toand much of his childhood was spent working and playing on his grandfathers farm, James Day He learned the importance of work and this is where he began to n feel and appreciate the Banking Co He later quit college to work at the Layton Sugar Company and Ogden Arsenal, prior to entering the service in 1943 to serve m world war II. Mr. Day served as an aviation cadet in the Army Air Corps and also as radio operator for two years in the South Pacific. AFTER BEING released from the service, he and his wife, the former Ora Land, moved to Los Angeles, Calif for a short time, returning to he was where Layton employed with the government at the Ogden Arsenal It was at this time he felt he should pursue his art career, so he enrolled in night classes at the Salt Lake Art Barn, Salt Lake City, (now known as the Salt Lake Art Center), where he received instruction in commercial art, figure drawing, still life, etc. IN 1957 he and his wife and rural living. three children moved to Kaysville, to their present school in Layton and later graduated from Davis High School. After graduation, he attended Weber State College for two years During his school years, he was interested m art and especially drawing cartoons with Hill Air Force Base where he was hired as temporary illustrator m the mam giaphtcs shop at the base W ith this talent and ability in this field, he remained closely associated with this work for 19 years. Day shows some of the oils at Barnes art exhibit Artt DISPLAYS ART HE RETIRED from the base in 1974 and with determination to use his time in painting During his 30 years with Civil Service he only found time to pdini one or two pictures a yedr, mostly water colors, but alwavs muintaim d an interest and desire to have more time to paint With retirement, this opportunity came and he found himself getting in his car with his paint box and canvas and going out nedrly five day s a week. mostly locally throughout Davis, Weber and Morgan Counties He prefers to paint out of doors by attempting to capture the basis Your First Call of a painting and then refining and adding the final touches at home, when the opportunity arises portant to get the feel and sensitivity into the painting with having been there He is presently pdintmg landscapes There is nothing wrong with a virgin landscape untouched by man, but the evidence of someone having been there makes it more meaningful to him. He loves to paint homes, farms, barnyards, etc. which he tries to get the feeling of the effects people have had in making the scene HE DOES enjoy painting (flowers, fruit, etc ) but it creates a more limited basis, it maybe because he finds people less interested in them as a rule Mr Day said he was grateful for the opportunity of attending classes and studying with such great artists as still-lif- e Of interest to THE CLASS will be held weekly in a three (3) hour Stssum fur a period of eight (8) weeks, during October and November New Kaysville Book Selections I Specializing Clan. I enjoy the harbor and wharf areas on the ocean, but must admit little interest m painting the ocean itself, maybe because I am not familiar enough with it or maybe because I did not develop a great love for the ocean while serving in the South Pacific. AT ANY rate he says he has not found anything to equal the subject matter of a rural landscape in very late fall or winter.
