Show 1 1 AERIAL MARVEL PLuIGESII0 BAY "Charley" Niles Nearly Loses Life in First Flight at Exposition. By International Ne,ws Service. SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. S. "Charley" Niles, the New York aerial marvel, nearly near-ly lost his life in his first flight at the exposition today. He fell 150 fpt into the bay near the stadium and suffered a slight fracture to the. lower jaw and severe se-vere cuts and bruises. Niles's monoplane had risen 150 feet Into the air and was making a circle over the bay when the engine stopped. He had been flying with the wind, but attempted at-tempted to awing around into the stiff breeze when the engine died. Suddenly the wings of 'i he monoplane-fluttered monoplane-fluttered and the machine plungedjspiral-ly plungedjspiral-ly downward imo the bay. Niles did not lose his presence of mind. While the machine wilf stiil in the air he unbuckled the strans'whu-h held him In his scat. When th monoplane-struck the water Niles scrambled to the lop of the aircraft. He was standing on top of the machine, up- to his armpits in w ater, when J. B. Croxton. in a racing motor boat, came to his rescue. In his farewell flight at the exposition today Aviator Art Smith hroke his own record by looping the loop twenty-two consecutive times. |
